There is no evidence in the sources reviewed that ordinary vertical placement causes PS5 liquid metal to leak or makes the console overheat. Sony says PS5 consoles use liquid metal to cool the main processor and designs the stand for both vertical and horizontal placement. Reports have raised concerns about leakage, but they do not establish a general defect or show how often it happens. If your PS5 overheats, start with Sony’s airflow and dust guidance rather than assuming the orientation is to blame.
What the reports establish—and what they do not
Sony confirms that PS5 consoles use liquid metal as the thermal interface material (TIM) for the main processor. In a 2024 teardown article, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida said: “One characteristic of PS5 consoles is that they leverage liquid metal with excellent thermal conductivity for the TIM (Thermal Interface Material) of its main processor.” Sony’s PS5 Pro teardown also says Sony researched insulation for the original PS5.
That confirms liquid metal is part of the cooling design; it does not confirm that it leaks when a console is vertical. The sources documenting the design do not establish a causal link between normal vertical placement and leakage or overheating, and they give no population failure rate. iFixit’s physical teardown of the original PS5 also observes liquid metal on the processor and notes that it is electrically conductive. It is an inspection of a console, not a study measuring failures by orientation.
Sony’s PS5 design story describes the console’s cooling fan and airflow optimization, and says its stand accommodates both vertical and horizontal placement. That supports using either orientation as intended; it cannot guarantee that an individual console is fault-free.

Can you leave your PS5 standing vertically?
Sony’s design story supports vertical placement, as well as horizontal placement. The available evidence does not justify telling PS5 owners that standing the console vertically will cause a liquid-metal leak. Nor does the stand address an internal cooling fault: it is for positioning, not a repair.
The PS5 Pro has a model-specific cooling detail. Sony says its basic liquid-metal structure remains, with fine grooves added where the liquid metal is applied “so that the cooling effect is more stable.” This is a description of the Pro’s design, not proof that earlier models have a vertical-placement defect or that the grooves fix one.

These are documented design distinctions, not comparative failure data. Sony’s launch announcement for the smaller model is dated October 10, 2023.
If your PS5 overheats, check airflow and dust first
A louder fan during some games can be normal: Sony says the fan may temporarily run faster to cool the system. Its support guidance focuses on ventilation and dust, not on diagnosing the liquid-metal condition of a particular console.

- Keep the side and rear vents unobstructed.
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console.
- Avoid placing it on long-fibre carpet or in a cramped space.
- Prevent dust from building up around the vents. For vent cleaning, Sony advises disconnecting the AC power cable and using a low-powered vacuum around the vents.
Follow the current directions on PlayStation Support’s PS5 ventilation and overheating page. These steps address ventilation and dust; they are not a diagnosis or repair for a suspected internal liquid-metal issue.

If overheating or abnormal fan noise persists after you have followed Sony’s prevention steps, contact PlayStation Support. Do not open the console or try to apply liquid metal yourself. Sony warns in its PS5 Pro teardown article that home teardown risks fire, electric shock, or injury, and says disassembly invalidates the manufacturer guarantee.
