A sportsbook bonus bet is promotional credit, not cash. In the operator examples below, a winning bonus bet credits winnings only; its stake is not returned. A cash bet ordinarily returns both stake and profit when it wins. Check the live offer terms for your sportsbook and location before using a bonus bet, because restrictions and settlement rules vary.
What is a sportsbook bonus bet?
A bonus bet—sometimes described as a free bet—is promotional credit an operator lets you use to place a wager. It is distinct from the cash balance in your account, and the credit may be restricted by an offer’s terms. The UK Gambling Commission says operators should make clear when customers are using their own money versus restricted bonus funds; its consumer guidance also advises checking offer restrictions before accepting them (UK Gambling Commission consumer guidance).
Do not assume every promotion called a “bonus” works the same way. A bonus bet token and bonus cash can have different conditions, particularly around play-through and withdrawals. Read the terms for the specific credit you received.
How a bonus bet differs from a cash bet

These operator examples illustrate common mechanics, not a universal sportsbook rule. DraftKings’ US help page says the bonus-bet stake is not included in potential winnings and that winnings from a bonus-bet wager go to the cash balance (DraftKings US bonus-bet help). Sportsbet Australia likewise shows a payout with the bonus stake subtracted (Sportsbet Australia bonus-bet help).

Why is the payout lower when I use a bonus bet?
Because the bonus stake may not be returned. With a cash bet, the displayed gross return at decimal odds usually includes the original stake. With the cited bonus-bet convention, the stake is removed and only the winnings are credited.
Sportsbet’s $20 example
Sportsbet Australia illustrates the calculation with a $20 bonus bet at decimal odds of 10: $20 × 10 = $200 gross return, then subtract the $20 bonus stake, leaving $180 in winnings. This is an explanation of that payout convention, not a recommendation about which event or odds to choose.

For an operator that excludes the bonus stake, the illustrative calculation is:
Bonus bet amount × decimal odds − bonus bet amount = winnings credited

Check how the sportsbook displays odds and settles the wager. The example above uses decimal odds and does not establish how another operator handles bonus bets.
How to use a bonus bet
- Open the offer details. In your sportsbook account, find the bonus bet or promotion’s terms. Confirm whether the credit is a bonus bet token or bonus cash.
- Check whether you qualify. Look for any required deposit or qualifying cash wager, and whether you can decline the promotion or withdraw from it.
- Verify the restrictions. Check the expiry date and time, timezone, eligible sports and markets, minimum or maximum odds, and whether you can split the credit or must stake it in one wager.
- Select an eligible wager. Confirm the market qualifies under the offer terms and that the bet slip identifies the bonus credit as the funding source.
- Review the displayed return and place the wager only if you choose. Make sure you understand whether the displayed figure includes the promotional stake and where any winnings will be credited.
- Check settlement and remaining credit. After the wager is settled, review the cash balance and bonus balance, plus any terms that apply to winnings.
DraftKings’ cited US terms require its bonus bet to be played once and before expiry; those conditions are specific to that operator and offer, not universal (DraftKings US bonus-bet help). Its separate terms page describes promotion conditions (DraftKings sportsbook promotion terms).

What if a bonus bet pushes, is voided, or expires?
There is no single rule established here for a push, void, dead heat, canceled event, or how quickly any returned credit reappears. Check the specific offer and the sportsbook’s settlement rules for each case. The same applies to expiry: confirm the exact date and time, including timezone, and whether unused credit disappears when that deadline passes.

- Is the credit a bonus bet/free-bet token or bonus cash with different play-through rules?
- What is the exact expiry date and time, including timezone?
- Which sports and markets qualify? Is there a minimum or maximum odds threshold?
- Must you stake the full amount once, or may you split it?
- How are pushes, voids, dead heats, and canceled events handled, and when would credit be returned?
- Are winnings immediately available as cash, or subject to further wagering requirements?
- Must you make a qualifying cash bet or deposit, and can you decline or withdraw from the promotion?
- Do local rules affect the offer?
These are questions to resolve from the current terms, not restrictions that apply to every promotion. The UK Gambling Commission advises consumers to review restrictions before accepting bonuses or free bets (UK Gambling Commission consumer guidance).

Why location matters
Rules differ by jurisdiction. In Great Britain, the UK Gambling Commission’s rewards-and-bonuses code in force from 19 January 2026 requires clear, transparent, fair, accessible terms; caps applicable wagering requirements at ten times; and prohibits mixing multiple gambling product types within an incentive (UK Gambling Commission rewards-and-bonuses code). That rule applies within its UK regulatory scope; it is not a universal limit for sportsbooks elsewhere.
The Commission’s 2025 explanation gives the arithmetic behind a wagering multiplier: a £10 bonus with a 50-times requirement would mean £500 in wagering. That example explains a calculation; it should not be read as a currently permissible offer under the later ten-times cap (UK Gambling Commission 2025 announcement).
A bonus bet is not a guarantee of value
Promotional credit still depends on an uncertain wager, and a payout illustration does not establish that a promotion is profitable. UK Gambling Commission research reports that promotions can confuse consumers about the distinction between personal money and bonus money and influence how they judge risk and potential value (UK Gambling Commission research on online promotions). Treat bonus credit as restricted promotional funds, not “free money” or a risk-free return.
