Identify the exact set and establish a price reference
Retired sets are generally bought on the secondary market. Search by the LEGO set number as well as its name so you are comparing the same release rather than a similarly named set or a different version. BrickLink’s marketplace separates sets, parts and minifigures, making the set number useful when narrowing a search: search by LEGO set number on BrickLink.
Before choosing a listing, check recent completed sales for that exact set. A seller’s asking price shows what they hope to receive, not necessarily what buyers are paying. BrickLink’s price guide is a useful reference point, but the evidence available does not establish one universal fair price: condition, completeness, market and delivery costs all affect value. Check current listings and sold prices when you are ready to buy.

Use the buying route that fits your priorities, rather than assuming one marketplace is always cheapest or safest. A specialist seller may charge more, so weigh any premium against the stated inspection and condition. On local marketplaces, arrange a way to verify what is included before paying and understand the protections available for your transaction.

Compare like with like before paying
Keep sealed or new listings separate from used ones when checking prices. For used sets, read the condition notes and confirm whether the listing includes all pieces, minifigures and instructions. If completeness is unclear, ask the seller for a specific answer before purchase.
Compare the full delivered price, not only the item price. Shipping can erase an apparent saving, especially if you need parts from several sellers. A multi-store parts order may become more attractive if shipping can be combined, but the total depends on the parts and sellers involved.

- Check seller feedback and the listing’s specific condition description.
- Confirm what is included and identify any missing pieces or instructions.
- Add shipping and any replacement-part costs to the comparison.
- For local purchases, verify the contents and condition before handing over payment.
Choose between a complete set and parts
If your goal is to build and display the model, a used complete set—or a used set completed with replacement LEGO parts—may suit you better than paying extra for sealed packaging. This is not a guarantee of lower cost: the price and availability of parts vary by set, and multiple orders can add shipping.
Before buying an incomplete set, identify the missing pieces and estimate the cost of sourcing them. Compare that combined amount with a complete used listing. If the price gap is small, the complete set may be simpler; if you value sealed packaging for collecting, compare sealed listings with other sealed examples instead of treating used prices as equivalent.

Why old price examples are not current valuations
eBay’s 2023 State of Collectibles report gave selected LEGO examples from a 2019–2022 dataset. The Grand Carousel 10196 averaged AUD $1,700 in 2019 and AUD $2,100 in 2022; Kings Castle averaged AUD $200 in 2019 and AUD $600 in 2022. Those figures describe the report’s selected examples, not today’s prices or a forecast for other sets. Use recent comparable sales for the set you are considering instead.
