First work out whether the problem is launching, creating or loading an in-game save, or Steam Cloud syncing: these can have different causes. Before changing files or choosing a Cloud-conflict version, check the game’s Cloud support and sync status, and make a copy of any confirmed save folder. The right launch fix depends on the specific visual novel, so use its developer’s instructions rather than applying another game’s steps.
Identify what is failing
Write down what happens and when. Does the game fail before its menu, reach the menu but refuse to create a save, or save successfully but fail to load that progress later? Note any exact error message and whether Steam says Cloud is up to date, syncing, or in conflict. Also note whether the issue began after an update, a device change, or playing offline.
These details help distinguish a launch problem from a save-file problem or a sync problem; none alone establishes the cause. If the game opens, a new test save can help establish whether it can create a file, but do not overwrite a valuable slot to test this.
Check Steam Cloud support and sync status
Cloud saving is not automatic for every Steam game, and developers choose which files their games synchronize. Check the game’s Steam Store page for Cloud support, then check the per-game setting in Library > right-click the game > Properties > General. Steam’s global Cloud option is under Steam > Settings > Cloud. Both the game-level and global settings can affect syncing. See Steam Support’s Steam Cloud guidance.

If Steam reports a Cloud conflict
A conflict means Steam has different local and cloud copies to reconcile. Compare the dates and times Steam displays with your last play session and the progress you remember on each device. Choose the copy that matches the progress you want to keep; do not assume that the newest timestamp is necessarily the right one if you played offline or used another device.
When a sync error appears, address it before launching if preserving progress matters. Steam warns that dismissing the error and continuing can lead to a conflict and lost progress. Recovery is not assured.

If a save is missing or not syncing
Confirm that the game supports Cloud, that Cloud is enabled in both relevant settings, and that Steam reports a completed sync rather than an error. If the game does not use Cloud saves, or the expected progress is absent, the files may be stored or managed in a game-specific way. Steam’s Steamworks Cloud documentation explains that developers configure file paths or use Steam’s API; there is no single actual-save folder that applies to every game.
Back up confirmed saves before file changes
Before moving, replacing, or deleting anything, copy the identified save folder to a separate location. A backup only helps if it contains the game’s actual save files, so ask the developer where those files are if you are unsure. A separate drive or other storage location can hold a copy, but it does not fix Cloud syncing or guarantee recovery.

Steam lists these default locations for local Steam Cloud data:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
These folders are organized by Steam account ID and game App ID. They are locations for local Steam Cloud data, not a guarantee that a game’s working saves are there. The game may use another configured path or Cloud integration method.

Use launch fixes only when they match your game
There is no universal launch option or file change for every Steam visual novel. Start with the game’s own official support page or developer instructions. Avoid deleting save or configuration files, turning off Cloud globally, reinstalling, or trying arbitrary launch options as first steps: the sources do not establish these as reliable fixes across visual novels, and file changes can put progress at risk.
For example, Mooncube Games’ Spirit City troubleshooting guide gives instructions for that specific game, including starting it through Steam and changing its Cloud setting in a particular troubleshooting context. Those directions are not general instructions for an unnamed visual novel. Follow them only for Spirit City and use your own game’s guidance for a different title.

Ask the developer to locate or recover unresolved saves
If the expected save is missing, Cloud is not supported, or a device change left progress behind, contact the game’s developer. Developers control Cloud integration and may be able to identify the save path or advise on transferring files. Steam Support can explain Cloud behavior, but says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve a user’s Cloud conflict.
Include the game title, operating system, exact error text, whether Cloud is enabled, and whether another device might have a newer save. Do not send or replace files until you have confirmed which copy contains the progress you want.
