To change a visual novel’s language on Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Properties, and choose a supported option under Language. Steam may download language files before you play. If the text does not change, check the game’s own Settings or Options menu: Steam’s client language, a game’s text language, and its audio language are not necessarily the same setting.
Change a game’s language in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the visual novel and choose Properties.
- Find Language. Steam’s support instructions call this the Language tab; some game-specific directions place the control in the General section.
- Select a language the game supports, then close the Properties window.
- If Steam prompts you to download language files, let the download finish before launching the game.
- Start the game and check its Settings or Options if the text has not changed as expected.
Language availability varies by title. Check the game’s Steam Store page for its listed language support, and consult the game’s manual or developer instructions for any title-specific steps. Steam Support notes that third-party games may have language settings independent of the Steam client language: Steam and Games – Language Settings.
Steam’s interface language is a separate setting
Changing Steam’s display language changes the client interface; it does not necessarily change a third-party visual novel’s text. To change the client language, open Steam > Settings > Interface, select a language, confirm, and restart Steam. On macOS, the menu is labeled Preferences rather than Settings. For a third-party game, use its Properties language control or its own documented settings.
Text, subtitles, and voice audio can use different languages
A language label does not guarantee that every part of a game is translated or voiced in that language. Steamworks treats interface text, subtitles, and full audio as separate language-support categories. Check the individual game’s Store page and documentation to see which apply.

For example, the Steam listing for Kanon says its text is available in Japanese, English, and Simplified Chinese, while its audio is Japanese only. Its language settings cover in-game text, options, and the digital manual, and can be changed at any time. This is a title-specific example, not a rule for other visual novels. Steamworks explains the separate categories in its localization documentation.
Some visual novels handle text settings differently
There is no universal in-game menu path for changing text language. A title may use Steam’s per-game language selector, an in-game menu, or a combination of the two. Follow instructions for the specific game rather than assuming that every visual novel has the same controls.

- Steam language selector: The developer of WHITE ALBUM: Memories like Falling Snow says the game uses Steam’s built-in language switching and downloads files for the selected language. The developer also documents separate save files for each language and recommends changing languages before starting. That save behavior is specific to this game.
- In-game language menu: The Dreamfall Chapters manual describes a “Select text language” option inside the game. This illustrates another possible approach, not a standard menu path for all Steam visual novels.
- Title- and version-specific instructions: Key’s planetarian HD announcements direct players to Library > Properties > Language for supported language changes. A historical announcement also described an experimental Japanese text option whose available original text was incomplete and might not display correctly. Check the instructions and version relevant to your copy.
If the language option is missing or does not work
- The language is not listed: Verify the game’s supported languages on its Steam Store page. A Steam client language change cannot add language support that the game does not offer.
- The game still displays the old text: Confirm that you changed the individual game’s language in Properties, not only Steam’s interface language. Check the game’s own Settings or Options and let any language-file download finish.
- Text changed but voices did not: Check the title’s language details; voice audio may be offered in fewer languages than text.
- You are changing language after starting a save: Read the developer’s instructions for that title before continuing. Save compatibility and save-file organization vary by game; the separate-save behavior documented for WHITE ALBUM is not universal.
- You are looking for font size or text speed: Those controls are not standardized across Steam visual novels. Consult that game’s manual or settings rather than expecting a specific Steam-wide menu.
