If you want to keep access to specific games after you stop paying a subscription, buy those games individually. On Xbox, physical discs are the clearest way to retain a copy; on PC, buying games from a storefront lets you build a collection, though its terms may still grant a license rather than ownership of the software. Treat Game Pass and similar catalogs as ways to play a wider rotating selection, not as permanent collections.
What changes when you leave Game Pass
Game Pass is access to a catalog, not a permanent claim on every game in it. Xbox says subscribers can play library games until their subscription ends or a game leaves the catalog. Its plan page advertises 400+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential, and hundreds of PC titles for PC Game Pass; those are page snapshots, and catalog size and availability vary by region, plan, platform, and time. Check Xbox’s current plans and catalog for your region.

That makes the useful question less “Which service replaces Game Pass?” and more “Which games do I want to return to, and what kind of access do I want to keep?” Individual purchases suit a player who repeatedly plays a small selection. A subscription may suit someone who samples many games and is comfortable losing access when a title leaves or membership ends.
Ways to keep access to selected games
| Route | How access works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox physical game disc | Keep the qualifying disc. Some supported discs can also claim a limited digital entitlement, but the disc must remain in your possession. | Console and disc compatibility, disc drive, used versus new price, included content, online-server dependence, and local resale rules. |
| PC storefront purchase | Store terms vary. A purchase may grant a license tied to an account or service rather than ownership of the software. | Game availability, device requirements, DRM and launcher, offline access or installers, sale price, cloud saves, and account dependence. |
| PlayStation Store purchase | Sony’s US terms describe digital purchases as a personal license for private use; access depends on the account. | Console ecosystem, sale price, storage, account access, and whether a physical edition is available. |
| PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium | Membership-based catalog access; some games have removal dates. Premium adds streaming options described by Sony. | Tier, catalog overlap, removals, download versus stream, region, and monthly cost. |
| Ubisoft+ | Subscription access depends on the plan, platform, and a game’s availability on the service. | Whether the games you want are included, platform, add-ons, availability, and local price. |
Xbox discs: the clearest console route
Buying an individual Xbox disc gives you a physical copy to keep, rather than access tied to a Game Pass membership. Confirm that the specific game works on your console and that your console has a usable disc drive. A disc does not necessarily include every add-on or guarantee that online features will remain available; check the product details and the game’s service requirements.

How Xbox Disc-to-Digital works
Microsoft announced Disc-to-Digital for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, with availability beginning for Xbox Insiders. The feature allows a player to claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game; the original disc continues to work. Microsoft’s rules make the entitlement conditional: you must keep the qualifying disc, Microsoft may require revalidation, and access can be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess it. The license cannot be transferred separately from the disc, and not every disc qualifies. Check Microsoft’s usage rules and the current eligibility for the exact title before relying on the feature.
Disc-to-Digital is therefore not an unrestricted digital purchase and does not remove the need to keep the disc. It is a convenience for eligible titles, not a reason to assume any disc will work.

PC purchases: choose a storefront with terms you understand
Windows players can buy individual games through storefronts including Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. Microsoft lists these among the storefronts available on Windows, but they do not offer identical terms or access features. Microsoft’s Windows gaming information describes the range of places to find PC games.
Read the terms for the storefront and the specific game. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says, “Your license confers no title or ownership in the Content and Services.” That is Steam’s stated treatment of its content, not a universal rule for every PC store. For each game, consider whether it needs a launcher or DRM, whether it can be played offline, how account access works, and whether the publisher provides an offline installer. GOG is often associated with offline installers, but download and DRM terms should be checked on the individual game’s page rather than assumed across the catalog.

Other subscriptions broaden access, not retention
PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium offer catalogs for players in that ecosystem, while Ubisoft+ focuses on Ubisoft titles and related access. Both can be useful if you want a changing library or a particular publisher’s games. Neither solves the core concern of keeping a chosen game after subscription access ends: check membership requirements, tier, platform, removals, and service availability before building your plans around a title.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare actual cost, not subscription against a guessed break-even point
There is no universal point at which buying games becomes cheaper. Compare your expected spending on titles you will actually play with local sale prices and the subscription fees you would otherwise pay. Include whether you will replay a game, whether a disc can be resold under local rules, and any hardware or storage cost. A subscription can be economical if you try many games; buying individually can make more sense when you return to a small number.

For a US reference point, Xbox Wire announced on April 21, 2026, that Game Pass Ultimate fell from $29.99 to $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99 per month. Xbox said prices may vary by region, so use the price shown in your account or local market rather than these figures for a non-US comparison. Read Xbox Wire’s pricing announcement and verify current pricing before deciding.
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose
- List the games you want to keep playing. Separate definite purchases from games you only want to sample.
- Check platform and format. On Xbox, confirm console compatibility and whether you have a disc drive. On PC, confirm system requirements, store availability, and offline or DRM terms.
- Compare the actual totals. Add up the current local prices of your chosen games and compare them with the membership cost over the period you expect to play.
- Decide what “keep” means to you. A physical disc is a copy you retain, subject to compatibility and game-service limits. A digital storefront purchase may remain subject to account and license terms.
- Use subscriptions selectively. Subscribe for the games you want to sample or the breadth you value, and buy individually the titles you want available beyond catalog changes.
