Probably—if Western imagery bothers you less than slow-burn character drama. Red Dead Redemption 2 centers on Arthur Morgan’s loyalty to the outlaw gang that raised him as its members’ situation deteriorates. But it is still unmistakably a Western, not a story that leaves the genre behind. The fit judgment here is an inference from the game’s official premise, not a claim about how every Western-skeptical player will respond.
What is the story about?
Set in America in 1899, the game follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang after a robbery in Blackwater goes wrong. As lawmen and bounty hunters pursue them, divisions within the gang deepen. Arthur must weigh his own ideals against loyalty to the group that raised him. Rockstar’s official page and PlayStation’s game page describe it as a sprawling tale at the dawn of the modern age.

For someone wary of Westerns, the potential draw is the gang’s relationships and Arthur’s personal choices, not just shootouts. PlayStation’s 2018 preview presents the gang as family-like and describes shared camp life, conversations, and activities (PlayStation Blog preview). Calling that a character drama is an interpretation of the described story, rather than an independent critical consensus.
How much Western do you have to accept?
A lot: the setting and premise are core to the story. The game explicitly deals in the Wild West, an outlaw gang, lawmen, bounty hunters, and travel across the American heartland. The ESRB description likewise identifies an open-world Wild-West environment with mission objectives and gunfights against lawmen and outlaws.
#1 Best Overall
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun;Engage in conversation with people you meet. Your actions influence Arthur's honour;Horses are a cowboy's best friend, both transport and personal companion;Bond with your horse as you ride together to unlock new abilities
- You may still be interested if cowboy imagery is not your favorite but you enjoy ensemble stories, moral conflict, and a group coming apart under pressure.
- It is probably a poor fit if outlaw plots, frontier settings, gunplay, or the Western genre itself are what you want to avoid. The narrative is built from those elements, rather than merely decorated with them.
Consider the format and content, not just the plot
Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open-world action-adventure, not a story-only experience. Its open-world classification and gameplay description make it worth considering whether you want that kind of game; they do not establish a specific completion time or guarantee a particular pace.
It is rated M for Mature 17+ by ESRB for blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, sexual content, strong language, and drug and alcohol use. The rating summary also describes graphic combat, violent cutscenes, and brief sexual material. Check the full ESRB rating if any of those are a concern.

- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
Which version includes Story Mode?
Platform and edition matter when you choose a copy. PlayStation’s US listing identifies a PS4 Standard Edition that includes Story Mode; Rockstar’s PC store also lists the game with Story Mode. These listings establish those versions, not current prices, physical availability, or stock. Check the store for your platform and the exact edition before buying.

Try it for the story if your objection is mainly to familiar cowboy imagery and you are open to an outlaw-family drama about loyalty and personal judgment. Pass if the Western premise itself is the problem, or if you want a tightly paced narrative without an open-world action-adventure surrounding it. The official descriptions support that distinction, but they cannot establish how players who dislike Westerns generally rate the story.
