Yes—some retro games work well with a keyboard and mouse, especially DOS and vintage-computer games built for those controls. Console games are less predictable: support depends on the emulator core, the game, and whether inputs go directly to the emulated system or are mapped to a virtual gamepad.
Why compatibility depends on the game and emulator
“Retro games” covers systems designed around different controls. A DOS game made for a computer keyboard or mouse is a natural match. A console game designed for a gamepad may accept keyboard keys only after you map them to controller buttons, and that does not make mouse aiming or movement available automatically. There is no complete compatibility list for every system and game, so check the selected core’s input options and the game’s controls.
Three ways a keyboard and mouse can control a retro game
Direct keyboard input
Some arcade and vintage-computer cores can be configured to receive keyboard input directly, as Libretro explains in its input and controls guide. This is distinct from pretending the keyboard is a gamepad.
Keyboard-to-controller mapping
RetroArch can map keys to virtual controller buttons or directions at controller, core, or game level. This can make keyboard keys usable where a game expects a gamepad, but it does not establish that the game supports mouse input or was designed for keyboard controls.

Mouse input or emulation
Mouse support varies by core. A core may receive mouse input directly, or provide an emulated mouse option. The DOSBox and DOSBox Pure cores document mouse-related options; those settings do not apply universally across RetroArch cores.
How to use a keyboard and mouse with DOSBox Pure
For DOSBox Pure in RetroArch, Libretro’s DOSBox Pure documentation specifies Game Focus mode for playing with a keyboard and mouse instead of a gamepad.

- Open the game in DOSBox Pure and enable Game Focus mode to use keyboard and mouse input.
- If mouse movement feels too slow or too fast, adjust DOSBox Pure’s mouse-sensitivity options.
- Try the core’s automatic mappings first. If they do not suit the game, use its mapper to assign controls to keyboard, mouse, or joystick functions.
These instructions are specific to DOSBox Pure. The standard DOSBox core documentation lists keyboard and emulated mouse device types, as well as a gamepad-emulated mouse option; its setup is not identical to DOSBox Pure’s.
How to check another RetroArch core
RetroArch’s general input and controls guide describes direct keyboard input for some cores and remapping at multiple levels. Its configuration guidance should not be mistaken for a single setting that enables keyboard and mouse in every game. (Use the core’s own device and input options; controls differ by core.)

- Check whether the core supports direct keyboard input, mouse input, or an emulated mouse.
- Check the game’s original control scheme and whether it expects a keyboard, mouse, joystick, or gamepad.
- If the game expects a controller, determine whether key-to-controller mapping is available and whether the game has enough controls for a comfortable layout.
Keyboard and mouse or a gamepad?

Also consider whether a game relies on analog movement, many simultaneous controls, or precise mouse movement. These are practical fit questions, not guarantees about any particular title. No specific peripheral model is established as necessary. If you already have a working keyboard and mouse, there is no reason to buy another set just to try a compatible game. Support depends on the game and core, not simply on connecting a particular product.
