That did not mean 40 million people were playing games: SteamDB’s contemporaneous figure put the in-game count at 12.6 million.
What Steam’s 40-million milestone measured
The 40,270,997 figure is an online-concurrency count: users connected to Steam at the same time. It is not a count of users actively playing a game. SteamDB said 12.6 million users were in-game at the time, a separate measure reported alongside the platform-wide total. VGChartz reproduced SteamDB’s statement; Gaming News also reported the in-game figure.

When did Steam reach 40 million concurrent users?
The first crossing occurred on March 2, 2025. The exact count, 40,270,997 online, was reported by VGChartz on March 3, citing SteamDB. The report establishes this as a historical milestone; it should not be presented as Steam’s current record.
How the milestone compares with Steam’s later count
Steam’s official statistics page is a changing snapshot, displaying current users and a peak for the most recent 48 hours. When the page was updated on October 4, 2026, at 4:03 a.m., it showed 35,873,584 current users and a 48-hour peak of 40,837,566. The current count and rolling peak are different measurements, and neither changes the date of the first 40-million crossing.

Where to check Steam concurrency figures
Valve’s official statistics page provides the current count and recent peak. For charts and historical data, SteamDB lists current and historical concurrent player counts. SteamDB says it refreshes its current top 1,000 games every five minutes and the remaining games every ten minutes, and discloses that it is not affiliated with Valve or Steam. The exact March 2025 milestone count is supported here by secondary reports citing or reproducing SteamDB’s post; the cited material does not establish a separate dated Valve announcement of that event.
Did a game release cause Steam to pass 40 million?
The reporting placed the milestone in the context of Monster Hunter Wilds’ release and noted that the game had more than 1.3 million players at release. That context does not demonstrate that one game caused Steam’s platform-wide peak. The evidence supports the record and its timing, not a specific cause.
