In Games Workshop’s March 2026 account, Perturabo’s campaign begins with a plan to bring the Cadian Gate under his dominion, while a 2021 Horus Heresy campaign looks back to the Siege of Hydra Cordatus. Those threads explain the faction’s enduring identity without making older units or kits proof of current 40,000 rules.
What defines the Iron Warriors?
The Iron Warriors are Chaos Space Marines whose defining motif is siege warfare. Games Workshop’s Horus Heresy coverage puts that identity at the center of its account of the Siege of Hydra Cordatus, a conflict between the Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists. The theme also connects their historical material to their modern narrative: in both, the Iron Warriors are associated with the methodical work of breaking fortified resistance.
That shared motif is useful context, not a claim that every story or game release belongs to the same era. The Horus Heresy material depicts an earlier conflict; the Cadian Gate campaign is part of the faction’s current Warhammer 40,000 narrative.
What is happening in the current Warhammer 40,000 story?
In a 2 March 2026 Warhammer Community article, Games Workshop describes Perturabo’s plan to conquer the Imperium. Its first step is bringing the Cadian Gate under his complete dominion. Despite the Great Rift and the surge of Chaos forces from the Eye of Terror, the Gate has not fully fallen. Agripinaa is named as one of the Imperial holdout worlds, and Iron Warriors forces are preparing to attack.

The book Reign of Iron follows those preparations and the assault. Warsmith Kravek Morne commands the many mortal and daemonic forces featured in the book. The article describes a strategic campaign led by Perturabo and a force commanded by Morne; it does not establish that every Iron Warriors force across the setting is unified under one organization.
What does the Hydra Cordatus siege cover?
Games Workshop’s 2 November 2021 article presents the First Siege of Hydra Cordatus as a Horus Heresy conflict between the Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists. The accompanying campaign package includes background, missions and a Dominator Cohort unit. It is an example of how the siege motif is explored in that game system, not a description of the modern Cadian Gate campaign.

- Add an infamous warrior and his cadre of closest warriors to your Chaos Space Marines army

The siege is called the First Siege retrospectively: the article explains that a Second Siege takes place ten millennia later, recounted in Graham McNeill’s Storm of Iron. The historical narrative draws inspiration from McNeill’s Angel Exterminatus. These books offer a reading connection between the campaign material and Iron Warriors fiction, while covering different points in the faction’s history.
How should players distinguish lore, models and rules?
The Hydra Cordatus article says a Dominator Cohort can be built using the Cataphractii Terminator kit and Cataphractii Special Weapons Set. That is a Horus Heresy modeling reference. It does not confirm that the unit, kit configuration or campaign missions have current Warhammer 40,000 rules.

- For current Warhammer 40,000 play: consult the current Codex: Chaos Space Marines and official updates for rules, points and unit availability. The cited campaign articles do not establish those details.
- For Horus Heresy play or modeling: use the Hydra Cordatus material for its historical campaign, missions and Dominator Cohort connection, and check the current Horus Heresy rules and store listings separately.
- For fiction: Angel Exterminatus is linked to the Hydra Cordatus narrative’s inspiration; Storm of Iron recounts the later siege.
Kit availability and edition compatibility can change, so the article’s 2021 modeling reference should not be treated as confirmation of current stock or rules in either system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where does the Belt of Iron fit?
The Belt of Iron is broader Horus Heresy setting context, not another name for the Cadian Gate campaign. Games Workshop describes it as a region of thousands of systems spanning the borders of Segmentum Tempestus and Segmentum Pacificus, named for its many Forge Worlds. Its account of the Cataclysm of Iron mentions worlds including Graia and Urdesh. This helps situate Iron Warriors stories in a wider conflict, but does not make the Belt and the Cadian Gate interchangeable locations or campaigns.
