To make a PS5 download game and app updates and install system software while it is in Rest Mode, enable Rest Mode internet access and switch on the relevant automatic-update options. Game/app updates and console system updates have separate settings.
Before you start: keep the PS5 online in Rest Mode
Automatic Rest Mode updates require the console to stay connected to the internet while it is in Rest Mode. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Sony’s power-saving guidance covers the Rest Mode options.
Turn on automatic game and app updates
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Choose the update behavior you want: turn on Auto-Download to download updates, or turn on Auto-Install in Rest Mode to download and install them while the console is in Rest Mode.
If you want to avoid an update closing a suspended game, use Auto-Download without Auto-Install. The update can download in Rest Mode, and you can decide whether to install it after resuming the game. Starting a game or app also triggers an update to its newest available version. See Sony’s guide to automatic downloads and updates for these settings and behaviors.
Turn on automatic PS5 system software updates
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Turn on Download Update Files Automatically and Install Update Files Automatically.
Sony says these options let the console update system software in Rest Mode so it is current the next time you use it. They are separate from the game and app update controls. The PS5 system software guide describes other update methods as well.

Check for an update manually
To check one game or app, highlight it on the home screen or in your game library, press the controller’s Options button, then select Check for Update. Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available. Sony lists this procedure in its update-checking guide.
If an update does not download or install
- Confirm that Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Check the right automatic-update page: game and app options are under Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates; system software options are under System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- For a particular game or app, use Options > Check for Update.
Sony notes that some updates may require approval, so automatic settings do not guarantee every update will finish without input. Its automatic-updates support page directs users with update problems to PlayStation Repairs; it does not identify which updates require approval. Manual system-software updating or reinstalling with a USB drive is a separate recovery path, not part of enabling these automatic settings.
