Steam Frame’s documented eye tracking measures where you are looking and helps direct higher-quality pixels to that part of the image. It is not the same as facial-expression tracking, which captures or estimates movements such as lip, jaw, and cheek motion for expressive avatar animation. Valve’s published documentation confirms the former, but does not establish built-in facial-expression tracking or compatibility with HTC’s VIVE Facial Tracker.
What Steam Frame’s eye tracking does
Valve says Steam Frame uses low-latency eye-tracking data to “steer the best quality pixels only to where you’re looking.” In other words, gaze data can guide image quality toward the wearer’s point of focus. That is a rendering use, not evidence that every game accepts gaze as an input or uses it to animate an avatar. Valve’s Steam Frame product page describes this use.
Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone headset that can run standalone VR and non-VR experiences and stream from a PC; Steamworks documentation lists SteamVR and OpenXR compatibility. Those platform capabilities do not, by themselves, mean an application receives or uses gaze data. How gaze tracking differs from facial-expression tracking

The two capabilities can use overlapping sensors or software, but one does not guarantee the other. A gaze tracker can estimate eye direction without directly measuring mouth or jaw movement. Software may infer selected expressions from eye-camera images, but that inference is not equivalent to a headset directly sensing and exposing a complete set of facial movements.

What a dedicated facial tracker adds
HTC’s VIVE Facial Tracker is an example of separate facial-tracking hardware. HTC says it captures 38 facial movements across the lips, jaw, teeth, tongue, cheeks, and chin, and lists dual cameras, an IR illuminator, and a 60 Hz tracking rate. These are HTC’s product specifications, not an independent assessment. HTC lists compatibility with VIVE Pro and VIVE Pro Eye families; that compatibility should not be assumed for other headsets. The cited HTC documentation does not confirm that the VIVE Facial Tracker works with Steam Frame. Valve’s cited Steam Frame materials confirm eye tracking, but do not document built-in facial-expression tracking. Treat Steam Frame compatibility with this or any future facial-tracking accessory as unconfirmed unless the relevant headset, tracker, runtime, and application vendors explicitly document support.

Can eye-camera images be used to infer expressions?
Technically, yes: a model can classify selected expressions from images of the eye region, but this is inference rather than direct full-face tracking. The 2017 Eyemotion paper reported mean accuracy of 74% across five emotive expressions and 70% across ten facial action units in its experiments. It also reported an average 7% accuracy improvement with personalization across experiments, with statistical significance for selected expression and action-unit results. Compatibility is a chain, not a single headset checkbox. Confirm that the hardware senses the desired signal, that the runtime exposes it, and that the specific application consumes it. For avatar expression, also check which face regions are covered and whether the app supports that tracker’s data format. A software listing that connects trackers to social-VR platforms is an example of a middle layer, not proof of universal device support: Baballonia’s Steam listing describes supported hardware that should be checked against the exact headset, tracker, runtime, and target app.

- For image quality or gaze interaction, look for explicit eye-tracking support in the game or runtime; Steam Frame’s gaze-directed pixel use does not ensure that every title reads gaze.
- For expressive avatars, check whether the hardware captures the face regions you care about and whether the target app supports that tracker.
- Compare measurement type, face coverage, direct sensing versus model inference, tracking rate or latency where documented, calibration or personalization needs, and software compatibility. Tracker counts are not directly comparable when devices measure different signals.
