If you want another open-world RPG with quests and a strong authored world, start with Cyberpunk 2077, from the studio behind The Witcher 3. If what you loved most was dark fantasy exploration, try Elden Ring; for a character-led western, choose Red Dead Redemption 2; and for extensive role-playing choices, consider Baldur’s Gate 3. The right follow-up depends on which part of Geralt’s adventure you want more of—and each game changes the formula in a different way.
Choose by what you want to keep from The Witcher 3
| If you want… | Try… | The main difference |
|---|---|---|
| Another open-world RPG with quest-driven storytelling | Cyberpunk 2077 | Futuristic city, firearms and other combat approaches instead of medieval fantasy. |
| A richly realized world and emotional character story | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Historical western setting and gunplay rather than fantasy and melee combat. |
| Dark fantasy exploration and demanding action | Elden Ring | Less direct NPC interaction and a less conventionally delivered story. |
| Quest flexibility and role-playing agency | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Party-based role-playing and a different combat format. |
| Open-ended fantasy roaming | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | You create your character and set more of your own direction. |
| Large monster fights | Dragon’s Dogma 2 or Monster Hunter: World | Combat and monster encounters take priority over a Witcher-like narrative. |
| Character relationships and consequential dialogue | Mass Effect Legendary Edition | A science-fiction trilogy rather than one open-world medieval adventure. |
Cyberpunk 2077: the closest follow-up in studio and RPG structure
Cyberpunk 2077 is the most natural first pick if you want another open-world role-playing game from CD Projekt Red. The studio describes it as a story about V, a hired gun, set in a dangerous future city; it describes The Witcher as a role-playing series following Geralt, a professional monster slayer. The shared connection is the studio’s focus on a central character in a detailed setting, not a shared genre or combat system. CD Projekt Red’s official game page
Expect a sharp change in atmosphere and action: Night City’s science-fiction setting replaces the Continent’s medieval fantasy, and combat is built around a different arsenal and play style. Choose it when you want another substantial, quest-led RPG—not when you specifically want swordplay or monster contracts.
Red Dead Redemption 2: for a world and cast you can settle into
If the appeal of The Witcher 3 was spending time in a richly detailed world alongside memorable characters, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a strong alternative. Its long, character-led story and historical western setting make it a different kind of journey: the fantasy creatures and melee combat give way to western gunplay. Pick it for its setting and central story rather than for Witcher-style monster hunting.
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
Elden Ring: for dark fantasy exploration and tough fights
Elden Ring is a good choice if you want a dark fantasy world to explore and are comfortable with challenging action combat. Its strongest overlap with The Witcher 3 is the atmosphere of journeying through a dangerous, strange world—not the way it delivers its story. It is less focused on direct interaction with NPCs, so players looking for frequent character conversations and quest exposition may find it a looser match.
Baldur’s Gate 3: for role-playing freedom and flexible quests
Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want character interaction, meaningful role-playing choices and different ways to approach quests. It suits players who like shaping how a story unfolds, but it is not mechanically close to The Witcher 3: it uses a party-RPG format and a different combat style. Go in for agency and quest flexibility, not for real-time sword combat or an open-world Geralt-like structure.

Skyrim: for self-directed fantasy roaming
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim works well if you want to create your own character, roam a fantasy world and decide what to do next. That freedom comes with a trade-off: Geralt’s authored story gives way to a looser sense of direction and a protagonist you define yourself. It is a better fit for open-ended exploration than for a closely guided, character-specific narrative.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: for action and large monster battles
If fighting large creatures is the part of The Witcher 3 you want to carry forward, consider Dragon’s Dogma 2. Its appeal here is action and experimenting with combat loadouts. Treat it as an action-focused alternative, not as a promise of the same quest structure or narrative emphasis.

Monster Hunter: World: for a hunt-and-fight loop
Monster Hunter: World is the most targeted pick if your favorite Witcher activity was tracking and fighting monsters. Its central draw is the hunt-and-combat loop, with a cooperative framework for players who want to hunt with others. It is not a substitute for The Witcher 3’s story-led role-playing; choose it for the hunts and combat progression.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition: for relationships and a continuing story
For character relationships, dialogue decisions and a story that continues across multiple games, try Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Its science-fiction setting and trilogy structure are the point of difference. It is a strong choice for a reader who values story and companions more than medieval fantasy or open-world exploration.
How to make the choice
- Start with Cyberpunk 2077 if you want the closest studio and open-world RPG connection.
- Pick Red Dead Redemption 2 for a detailed world and an emotional central story.
- Choose Elden Ring for difficult combat and dark fantasy exploration.
- Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 for role-playing choices and flexible quests, accepting its different combat format.
- Go for Monster Hunter: World or Dragon’s Dogma 2 if combat against monsters matters more than narrative similarity.
These are preference-based recommendations, not an objective ranking; the best next game is the one that preserves the part of The Witcher 3 you actually want more of.
