Game Bub plays physical Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges, and it can load user-supplied homebrew ROMs from a microSD card. Cartridge play needs no ROM setup; ROM loading requires a FAT32-formatted card with an MBR partition table. The device does not come with commercial game ROMs or original Nintendo BIOS files.
Which games and formats does Game Bub support?
Game Bub is an open-source FPGA handheld designed for the Game Boy family. Its documented supported systems are Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. You can play those systems’ physical cartridges or load homebrew ROM files from microSD. The official introduction also describes link-cable multiplayer and an optional dock.
How to play a physical cartridge
- Turn Game Bub off or return to the main menu before inserting or removing a cartridge.
- Insert a supported Game Boy, Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance cartridge.
- From the main menu, choose Run Cartridge.
The guide cautions against inserting or removing cartridges while a game is running, because doing so can cause data loss. Follow the device’s user guide for the current operating instructions.
How to load a homebrew ROM from microSD
ROM loading is optional. You need a microSD card prepared with a FAT32 file system and an MBR partition table; exFAT and GPT are not the documented formats. Use ROM files you are entitled to use—Game Bub does not provide a commercial ROM collection.

What about Game Boy BIOS files?
The guide says original Nintendo Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance BIOS files cannot legally be redistributed. Game Bub instead includes free, open-source replacement BIOS implementations. These are not exact substitutes in every respect: the documented limitations include unsupported palette selection in GBC compatibility mode, unsupported GBA multi-boot, and possible bugs in some GBA games due to incompatibilities. The same guide describes the BIOS situation and limitations in its user documentation.

Can Game Bub back up cartridges or saves?
Yes. Game Bub can work with FlashGBX software to dump cartridges and back up or restore saves. The project documents a few uncommon flashcart limitations, so do not assume every flashcart or backup operation is supported; see its FlashGBX documentation.
You can also mount the microSD card over USB, but the documented transfer speed is below 1 MB/sec. The project recommends a dedicated card reader for large file transfers. USB mounting is therefore useful for modest transfers, not a substitute for a faster reader when moving many or large files.

Other ways to get and use Game Bub
The official documentation directs buyers to the Crowd Supply listing for the prebuilt handheld. When accessed on October 4, 2026, that listing showed a price of $269 and “In stock”; price and availability can change, so check the current listing before ordering. The listing also describes the separate Game Bub Dock for connecting the handheld to a TV or monitor and using compatible controllers.
A self-build is another route, but it entails PCB production and assembly as well as 3D-printed parts. The project warns that it is not beginner-level and recommends electronics experience. Its project repository publishes source and design files. Crowd Supply describes the hardware, firmware, and gateware as open source, with software licensed under GPLv3 and hardware under CC BY-SA 4.0; that licensing statement is the project’s own description.
