Reigns vs. Choice-Based Narrative Games: Which Should You Play?

Reigns suits players who enjoy fast decisions, faction balancing, and replaying for new consequences. Here’s how its entries differ—and when to look for another kind of narrative game.

Play Reigns if you want quick, replayable decisions, shifting faction balance, and consequences that can carry across successive rulers. Look elsewhere if your main goal is a sustained, character-led story with room to unfold—but “choice-based narrative games” covers many different formats, so the fairest comparison depends on which specific game you have in mind.

What kind of game is Reigns?

Reigns builds its play around a repeated sequence of short decisions. You respond to requests and situations by swiping left or right, while trying to keep influential factions in balance. Choices can have later implications for a ruler and the dynasty. Devolver Digital describes this central loop on its official Reigns page.

The appeal is both narrative and systemic: decisions produce story developments, but managing the pressures created by those decisions is a central part of play. That compact, repeatable structure makes Reigns a natural fit for players who enjoy testing outcomes across runs. It may be a less direct fit for someone who chiefly wants an extended, continuous plot; that is a judgment about format, not a measured comparison of player preferences.

How to decide between Reigns and another choice-based game

“Choice-based narrative game” is a broad label, not one fixed design. Some games emphasize brief choices and repeatable systems; others may spend more time on dialogue, exploration, or a continuous story. Without naming a particular alternative, it would be misleading to promise that every other game offers deeper stories, more agency, or less repetition.

What matters to you Why Reigns may fit What to check in an alternative
Choice cadence Frequent, short decisions made with left-or-right swipes. Whether choices arrive in similarly brief beats or are part of longer stretches of dialogue or exploration.
Narrative continuity Decisions unfold through repeated reigns and can affect a dynasty. Whether the specific game offers a more sustained plot, rather than assuming that all choice-based games do.
Choice feedback Choices affect faction balance and may have later consequences. How the named game shows branching, character reactions, or other outcomes.
Extra systems Different entries add distinct mechanics, including items, challenges, negotiation, alliances, or battles. Which additional activities the specific game includes, and whether they appeal to you.

Which Reigns game should you try?

Choose Reigns for the core loop

The original Reigns is the straightforward choice if you want to try its defining structure: swiping through decisions while balancing the interests of competing factions. The studio’s creative director, François Alliot, described the series’ foundation as “making choices and facing their immediate consequences” in CD PROJEKT RED’s development article about Reigns: The Witcher.

Choose Her Majesty for items and challenges

Reigns: Her Majesty retains the decision-card approach and adds item use and royal challenges. Devolver Digital says completing challenges unlocks cards and narrative directions; see the official Her Majesty page. It is the better fit within the series if you want those extra mechanics alongside the familiar format.

Choose Three Kingdoms for negotiation and battles

Reigns: Three Kingdoms adds military negotiations, marriages to strengthen alliances, and turn-based card battles to the series’ decisions. Devolver Digital outlines these features on its official Three Kingdoms page. Consider it if diplomacy and battles appeal more than a choice loop on its own.
