Sometimes. A studio closing does not automatically remove a game from your library, but it also does not guarantee that the game—or every mode—will keep working. Download access depends on the platform and store; playability depends heavily on whether the game needs servers or online authentication. Delisting, store closure and game-server shutdown are separate events.
What a studio closure does—and does not—change
A studio shutting down does not by itself tell you whether you can download a game you already acquired. Storefronts set their own policies, and the fate of a title’s servers and online services is a separate issue.

For Steam, Valve says a retired game remains in existing players’ libraries and can still be downloaded, installed and launched. That is Steam’s stated policy; it is not a guarantee about every store, every game feature, or future access on other platforms. Valve’s Steamworks guidance on retired games.
It helps to separate three questions: Is the game still for sale? Can an existing account download it? Does the installed game still function? The answer to one does not settle the others.

Delisting and store closure are not the same as losing a game
When a title is delisted
Delisting means a store stops offering a title for new purchases; it does not necessarily mean that existing customers lose access. GOG says a user’s library remains available after a game is delisted and that offline installers can still be downloaded. Steam likewise says retired games remain in existing players’ libraries. These are the named stores’ policies, not a universal rule. GOG’s explanation of delisted games.
When a store closes
A store’s closure is distinct from the shutdown of a game’s servers. Xbox says previously purchased Xbox 360 games remain playable and can be re-downloaded after the Xbox 360 Store closure, while multiplayer depends on whether the publisher continues supporting the relevant servers. Xbox’s Xbox 360 Store notice.

PlayStation’s UK guidance says PS3 and PS Vita users can continue playing owned content, subject to a game’s online features and service availability, and can re-download previous purchases for the foreseeable future. The notice concerns changes to purchasing on those platforms; it does not promise that every online feature will remain available. PlayStation’s store and service notice.
Server shutdowns can remove a mode—or the whole game
Downloading a game is not proof that it will run without a connection. A game may use publisher servers for multiplayer, online-only progression, authentication, or other core functions. Once those services stop, the result depends on how the game was built: some offline content may remain, while an always-online game may become unplayable. The European Commission’s 2026 document describes this broader server-dependence issue; it does not predict the outcome for a particular title. European Commission document on server-dependent games.

Examples from PlayStation shutdown notices
- Gran Turismo Sport: PlayStation says the offline portions remain playable after its online services ended, including purchased add-ons.
- GUNS UP!: PlayStation says the game would no longer be playable after service termination because it requires an online connection.
- LittleBigPlanet 3: PlayStation says online services and access to other players’ creations are unavailable, while locally stored user content remains available.
These examples show why it is important to check what happens to the specific game’s modes and services rather than assume that “the game” has one outcome. PlayStation’s service notices.
What can remain available after a shutdown?
Different parts of a game can have different fates. Check each item separately rather than treating access to the base game as proof that everything still works.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
- Game client: Can your platform still download or install it?
- Single-player campaign: Does it start and run without publisher servers or online authentication?
- Multiplayer and online features: Are the servers still supported?
- DLC and add-ons: Can you re-download them, and do they work with the remaining version of the game?
- Saved progress, cloud services and community content: Are they stored locally or dependent on an online service?
Can an offline installer protect access on PC?
Where a store offers an official offline installer, keeping a copy can reduce dependence on that storefront for installation. GOG says users can download offline installers for games in their library, including delisted titles. Its preservation program tests and updates selected games for popular PC configurations and is currently Windows-only. GOG Preservation Program.
An installer is not a universal fix. It cannot recreate publisher servers, bypass every DRM or authentication requirement, or guarantee that a game will remain compatible with future hardware and operating systems. If offline play matters, install the game and test it disconnected from the internet before relying on it.

Digital access is not necessarily permanent ownership
Digital purchases can be governed by licence terms rather than convey ownership of a permanent copy. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s 2025 report describes standard-form terms for Steam, Epic Games Store and PlayStation Network as licences to access and play, not ownership of the digital game. This describes specified platform terms and Australian consumer research; it is not universal legal advice for every country, platform or purchase. ACCC Digital Platform Services Inquiry final report.
In the ACCC’s survey of Australian game players, conducted in October–November 2024 and reported in 2025, 56% said they were unaware that purchasing a digital game from some stores may provide a licence to access and play rather than ownership. That finding is specific to the survey’s Australian respondents, not players globally. ACCC report.
How to check whether your game will remain usable
- Identify the platform and account. Check that platform’s current support page for its policy on re-downloading purchased content, including any region or hardware qualifications.
- Look for the game’s official notice. Check for delisting announcements, server shutdown dates, and details about which modes, add-ons or user-created content will remain.
- Test offline play. Install the game, disconnect from the internet and try the modes you care about. A downloaded client may still require online authentication or server-side functions.
- Save an official installer if available. For a PC game, download the store’s official offline installer and keep a backup copy. This helps with installation but does not preserve online services.
- Check the licence and compatibility. Consider the terms tied to your purchase, whether your hardware and operating system can still run the game, and whether the copy needs patches or a platform client.
Do not treat a physical disc or a saved installer as a guarantee: a game can still require patches, compatible hardware, online authentication or publisher servers.
