Anti-reflective glass can reduce the light a solar panel reflects, allowing more light to enter the module. That is a real optical benefit, but it does not guarantee a particular increase in household electricity production, eliminate glare, or come with a standard price premium. Many current panels already use anti-reflective glass. Compare the actual glass specifications, site-specific energy estimates, warranty evidence, glare conditions and itemized quotes—not just the label.
What makes a panel’s glass anti-reflective?
At the front surface of a solar module, some incoming light is reflected, some absorbed and some transmitted into the panel. An anti-reflection coating is designed to reduce reflection through optical interference; its performance depends in part on its thickness and refractive index. Textured glass is a different approach: its surface can scatter mirror-like reflection and help direct light into the module. The terms “anti-reflective,” “textured” and “glare-free” therefore do not mean the same thing.
The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) explains these mechanisms in its September 2016 report on anti-reflective and anti-soiling coatings. A coating’s name alone does not establish its measured reflectance or the power benefit of a particular panel; check the manufacturer’s datasheet for product-specific information.
Can anti-reflective glass increase output?
It can improve light transmission, which supports a possible power benefit. But an optical mechanism is not the same as a guaranteed annual-energy gain. EPRI’s illustrative calculation assumes a 1.6 m² module, 15% conversion efficiency and approximately 1,000 W/m² of incoming irradiance. Under those assumptions, its example estimates that bare planar glass reflecting 4% represents about 10 W of potential power. EPRI also illustrates an ideal coating taking a 240 W module to 250 W, and explicitly presents that as a best-case scenario—not a measured comparison of current retail panels or a promise of extra yearly electricity.

The available evidence does not establish a manufacturer-neutral figure for how many additional kilowatt-hours per year a buyer should expect from anti-reflective glass versus a standard panel. The comparison that matters for a home is the modeled production of the specific modules at that site. Panel rating, roof direction and tilt, shade and local climate all affect that estimate.
Do anti-reflective panels prevent glare?
No. Solar panels are designed to absorb sunlight and reflect less than mirrors, but they are not automatically glare-free. A brief flash is often called glint; a more sustained bright reflection is called glare. Whether either is a practical issue depends on the glass and on the geometry between the sun, panel and observer. A coating or texture may reduce reflection, but it cannot be treated as a guarantee that no observer will see a bright reflection.

The evidence is specific to the systems and methods studied. A 2011 modeled case study of one theoretical flat-plate photovoltaic system near Las Vegas found hazardous-glare potential similar to smooth water and did not expect a hazard to air navigation. A 2021 study of four building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) glass and coating technologies reported several orders of magnitude lower relevant luminance, without reducing the measured performance of the technologies it tested. Neither result establishes what will happen for every panel, installation angle, time of day or viewing location. See the 2011 modeled study and the 2021 BIPV study.
When a site-specific glare review matters
For a project near an airport or another glare-sensitive location, assess the actual site and consult the relevant current authority guidance. The FAA’s May 26, 2021 announcement says its policy applies to proposed solar energy systems at federally obligated airports with control towers. It describes an airport review process involving visual-impact analysis and specified filing; it is not a universal glare rule for residential solar installations. See the FAA policy announcement for its stated scope.

Do anti-reflective panels cost more?
There is no supported current, universal price premium for anti-reflective glass. EPRI’s 2016 report describes factory-integrated anti-reflective glass as a relatively easy drop-in replacement during module manufacturing. Applying a coating after a module has already been made adds processing cost and may cause production yield loss. That historical manufacturing discussion does not set today’s retail or installed price.
Installed solar costs depend on more than module glass. The National Laboratory of the Rockies’ Solar Installed System Cost Analysis covers residential rooftop, commercial rooftop and utility-scale systems, and its page lists Q1 2025 PV system cost benchmarks. Those benchmarks depend on system type, geography, date and assumptions; they are not a coating surcharge or a substitute for a local quote. Compare current itemized proposals rather than assuming the glass feature has a fixed cost or will pay for itself.

How to compare two panels or solar quotes
To judge whether an anti-reflective option is worthwhile, keep the comparison as like-for-like as possible. Ask the installer or manufacturer for the underlying specifications and assumptions rather than relying on a marketing label.
- Panel performance: compare module technology, rated power and efficiency, including the stated test conditions.
- Front glass: ask whether it is coated, textured or both; request reflectance or transmittance data and confirm whether treatment is integrated at the factory.
- Durability: review the module and glass-related warranty terms and what evidence supports long-term coating durability. The available evidence does not establish a universal coating lifetime.
- Expected production: compare modeled annual output for the same roof direction, tilt, shade and climate, using the same assumptions for each option.
- Installed cost: compare itemized panel, inverter, mounting, labor, permitting and other project costs, not just the module line.
- Glare exposure: identify relevant viewing locations and check whether local or regulatory review applies to the site.
Do not assume a coating can be safely or effectively added to a finished module. EPRI describes anti-reflective treatment as a manufacturing-stage feature and notes cost and compatibility challenges with post-manufacture processing.
