The right hardcore RTS for a friend group depends on whether you want to fight each other, cooperate against AI, or share command. For the most intense head-to-head match, choose StarCraft II 1v1; for co-op against AI, start with Age of Empires IV. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is a useful bridge into competitive play, while Company of Heroes 3 offers a more tactical wave-defense co-op mode. These are mode-based recommendations, not a claim that one game is universally best.
Choose by the kind of challenge you want

For the most intense head-to-head: StarCraft II 1v1
Pick StarCraft II 1v1 if you and your friend want a direct contest where each player commands their own base and army. Blizzard characterizes 1v1 as the game’s most competitive mode, making it the clearest choice here for friends who specifically want pressure and rivalry rather than cooperation. That intensity also makes it a less forgiving starting point if one player is much less experienced or neither wants a high-stakes duel.
For shared command: StarCraft II Archon Mode
Archon Mode changes the social dynamic: two friends control the same base and army. Blizzard describes it as playing the 1v1 game together, not as a separate campaign or conventional two-player co-op against AI. It is a good fit when you want to coordinate decisions and execution on one side; it is not the pick if your group wants each person to command an independent faction.
For co-op against AI and a gentler on-ramp: Age of Empires IV
Age of Empires IV supports multiplayer skirmishes against friends, AI, or other online players, and its official quickstart guide describes co-op against AI. That gives a group a way to learn together without making the first session a direct contest. For players inexperienced with RTS games, the developer World’s Edge recommends Mission Zero as a way to learn the basics. See Age of Empires IV’s official game page.

For learning competitive play together: Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
Use Quick Play if you want an unranked way to learn competitive maps and settings, then move to custom games for a private group match or to play with AI opponents. The distinction matters: Quick Play is for practice in competitive-style play, while custom games give you more direct control over who is in the match and whether you face AI or community members. Check the official Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition page.
For tactical wave-defense co-op: Company of Heroes 3
Company of Heroes 3’s Final Stand mode is described in official announcements as a wave-defense experience playable alone or with a friend. That makes it a different kind of co-op challenge from building toward a conventional competitive match. Because co-op lobby and balance details may change with updates, check recent official patch notes or in-game mode availability before organizing a session. Visit the official Company of Heroes 3 site.

Why Stormgate needs an availability check
Stormgate’s Steam page lists PvP and three-player co-op, but a report said online modes were due to be suspended at the end of April 2026. Whether service resumed by October 2026 is not established here, so do not count on online play until a current official service notice confirms it. Its listed modes make it relevant on paper, but the uncertainty around access makes it a poor choice for a group planning a session without checking first. [c005]

The documented modes help distinguish direct competition, shared control, co-op against AI, practice, and wave defense. They do not establish comparable player populations, queue times, balance quality, or adjustable difficulty across these games. Treat the recommendations as a way to match a mode to your group, not as a ranking by activity, balance, or objective quality. [c006]
