The 2025 HP OMEN MAX 16 delivers high-end gaming performance in a premium aluminum chassis, but it is heavy and can get loud when pushed. Its biggest buying decision is the configuration: RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 versions, with IPS and OLED displays, are not interchangeable—and the tested RTX 5090 results should not be assumed for every model.
Which OMEN MAX 16 are you buying?
HP sells the OMEN MAX 16 as a family, not a single fixed specification. Notebookcheck describes configurations starting with a Core Ultra 7 255HX, RTX 5070 Ti and 2K IPS display, and extending to a Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5090 and 1600p OLED. Other combinations exist: HP’s surfaced US datasheet for SKU 16-ah0097nr lists a Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5080 Laptop GPU with 16GB GDDR7, 32GB DDR5-5600, a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD and a 16-inch 2560 × 1600 60–240 Hz IPS display. Check the regional datasheet and listing; neither OLED nor a particular GPU is guaranteed by the model name alone.

How fast is it for gaming and creative work?
Strong performance, specific to the GPU and settings
Tom’s Hardware found its Core Ultra 9 275HX / RTX 5090 Laptop GPU test unit powerful in synthetic benchmarks and real games, broadly matching other RTX 5090 laptops it tested. That does not make it the automatic gaming leader: some RTX 5080 competitors kept pace with or surpassed that system. Windows Central likewise reports strong gaming and demanding-work performance on its Core Ultra 9 275HX / RTX 5090 configuration.
PC Gamer tested Cyberpunk 2077 at native 1600p and reported 38 fps, rising to 116 fps with DLSS 4 multi-frame generation. The latter figure includes generated frames; it is not a native-rendered frame rate. Treat it as a result from that review’s settings, not a promise for every OMEN MAX 16 or game.

RTX 5080 or RTX 5090?
The RTX 5090 is the top graphics option, but the evidence does not establish that its premium buys a proportionate gaming gain in every configuration. Windows Central found its RTX 5080 version offered nearly identical gaming performance to its RTX 5090 version while saving hundreds, and advised paying extra for the 5090 only when maximum VRAM is specifically needed. Tom’s Hardware’s observation that some RTX 5080 competitors kept up with its 5090 test unit points in the same direction, though it is a comparison across particular laptops and tests—not a universal ranking.
Compare the exact GPU tier, power limit, panel and price on the listings you are considering. If the 5080 model has the screen and capacity you want, the 5090 is not automatically the better value.

Does the cooling keep performance stable?
Windows Central recorded 99.4% frame-rate stability across 25 Time Spy runs on its Core Ultra 9 275HX / RTX 5090 review unit. That is a strong result for sustained consistency in that test, but it does not mean the laptop runs quietly. Windows Central described its fans as loud and higher-pitched, while Notebookcheck’s review headline called its tested RTX 5090 Laptop GPU configuration (listed at 175 W) very fast but somewhat too hot. These are review-specific observations, not evidence of a family-wide reliability problem.
Performance mode is an acoustic trade-off
PC Gamer reports that Unleashed mode can drive the fans up to 5,000 RPM and is conspicuously loud. Its quieter Balanced mode scored almost 25% lower in Time Spy Extreme than the more aggressive setting. That is a result from PC Gamer’s test and benchmark, not a general prediction of the percentage of gaming performance lost in every title. For quiet play, Balanced may be preferable; for maximum benchmark performance, expect more fan noise.

Are the display and build worth the bulk?
OLED is an option, not a family-wide feature
The high-end Tom’s Hardware test configuration had a 2560 × 1600, 240 Hz OLED panel, which the reviewer praised for vivid color and wide viewing angles. Windows Central describes an OLED option with 0.2 ms response time, alongside IPS LCD choices. HP’s surfaced 16-ah0097nr configuration is IPS, despite its Core Ultra 9 processor and RTX 5080 graphics. Confirm the panel type, resolution and refresh-rate range for the precise SKU before buying.
Premium materials, substantial carry weight
Tom’s Hardware describes a mostly aluminum black chassis with a premium feel, but its tested laptop weighed 6.1 pounds, with the power brick adding around two pounds to a bag. Windows Central also puts the body just over six pounds. The rear shelf that projects from the chassis houses ventilation and ports. This is better suited to a desk that can occasionally travel than to a machine you want to carry lightly every day.

Keyboard impressions differ by review: Tom’s Hardware found the feel mushy and lifeless, so buyers who type for long sessions should try it in person if possible. RTINGS notes that the family’s RAM is upgradeable, an advantage over some competing thin laptops with soldered memory; verify the upgrade details for the exact model year and SKU.

Verdict: who should buy the OMEN MAX 16?
The OMEN MAX 16 is compelling if you want high-end gaming power, a solid-feeling aluminum chassis and the option of a fast OLED screen, and you can accept a heavy machine with audible fans under load. Choose by exact SKU: an IPS RTX 5080 configuration is meaningfully different from an RTX 5090 OLED test unit. The RTX 5090 makes most sense when its added capability or VRAM matters to your work or games; otherwise, the reviewed evidence makes the RTX 5080 worth serious consideration.
