No. Sony supports vertical placement for PS5 consoles when you use the stand or base specified for your model. The reports about liquid-metal leakage raised a concern, but they do not show that ordinary upright placement causes PS5 consoles to fail.
What Sony says about PS5 placement
Sony’s PS5 FAQ says both PS5 models support vertical or horizontal placement using the adjustable base. Sony’s design description likewise says the stand accommodates both positions (PlayStation 5 Design Story).
That guidance establishes that both orientations are intended options when the console is set up as directed. It is not a guarantee against an individual hardware failure, nor a long-term study proving that one orientation has a lower failure rate.
Use the right stand for your PS5 model
Sony’s setup guide gives different instructions by model group:

- CFI-1000 group: Follow the guide’s instructions for attaching the included base for vertical or horizontal placement.
- CFI-2000 Slim and CFI-7000 PS5 Pro groups: Sony says a separately sold vertical stand is needed for vertical placement. Check your model number and the accessory’s compatibility before buying.
Sony announced a separately sold vertical stand compatible with all PS5 models in 2023 (announcement). That is an accessory option, not evidence that the stand prevents an internal hardware problem.
What the liquid-metal reports do—and don’t—show
The concern that circulated in January 2023 involved liquid metal used to transfer heat from the PS5’s APU. Repair-related claims described liquid metal escaping its containment and potentially reaching other components. Push Square characterized those claims as unverified and noted that a seal failure would be needed for the substance to escape (report).

This describes a possible failure mechanism, not proof that keeping a normally functioning PS5 upright causes it. The cited reporting does not establish how often such a failure occurs or show that vertical orientation causes it.

The available sources do not provide measured failure rates comparing vertical and horizontal use. They also do not establish that one position improves temperature or lifespan. Choose the orientation that fits your setup and follow Sony’s model-specific stand instructions; there is no evidence here to justify treating horizontal placement as a proven reliability fix.
