On most supported Samsung Galaxy phones, go to Settings > Software update > Check for updates, then follow the prompts if an update is offered. Menu names vary by model and software version, and a specific One UI release is available only when Samsung and the carrier have released it for that device and region.
Install an update from Settings
- Connect the Galaxy phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Availability and download behavior can depend on carrier and device settings.
- Open Settings > Software update. On some devices, the menu is called System updates.
- Tap Check for updates, Download and install, or the equivalent option shown on your phone.
- If an update is offered, download it and follow the on-screen installation instructions. The phone may restart during installation.
- Samsung advises charging the battery to at least 20% before updating.
Samsung notes that menu names and layout differ by model and software version. Its general Galaxy phone and tablet update guide explains the Settings route.
Use Smart Switch on a computer
Samsung Smart Switch is an alternative when the phone does not show an update. It requires a Windows PC or Mac, the Smart Switch application, and a USB connection. It can install only an update made available for that particular device.
- Install or open Smart Switch on the Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the phone to the computer by USB and allow Smart Switch to detect it. Some computers may require a USB adapter.
- Select Update if the option appears, then follow the prompts to download and install.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the update finishes. The phone will reboot.
See Samsung’s update instructions and Smart Switch guidance for details. A replacement cable is only relevant if you need one: use a USB cable that supports data transfer. A wireless update through Settings does not require a cable.

Choose the update route that fits

Neither route bypasses Samsung’s or the carrier’s rollout: both show only updates released for that device.
Why a One UI update may not appear
One UI availability is not universal across Galaxy phones. Samsung says timing and availability can depend on model, carrier, and region; releases may also arrive in waves. Even a SIM-unlocked phone may require a SIM from its original carrier, depending on its model and carrier history.

- Confirm update availability for the exact model and carrier using the carrier’s model-specific update information.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and check again in Settings, or see whether Smart Switch detects an update.
- If the rollout is still in progress, check again later. Do not rely on a general release date to establish availability for a particular phone.
Samsung’s One UI page described One UI 9 as its latest iteration on October 4, 2026, and named initial devices while saying more models were expected. That announcement does not establish that One UI 9 is available for every Galaxy model, region, or carrier.

- Not enough storage: Free at least the amount of space the phone specifies, then retry.
- Download stopped partway: Samsung says the download may be resumed from its notification.
- Repeated download failures: Try installing through Smart Switch on a computer.
- Smart Switch cannot connect: Check for computer updates, restart the computer, and make sure the phone’s USB mode allows file transfer. Try another USB port or data-capable cable, or another computer.
- Phone will not boot normally after a failed update: Contact Samsung support or service. Before attempting a factory reset or emergency recovery, back up important data if possible; Samsung warns that reset or recovery can erase data.
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance covers update and connection problems. Avoid interrupting a Smart Switch installation while it is in progress.
