The ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1070 Ti and ZOTAC GTX 1070 Ti AMP Extreme deliver broadly similar performance because they use the same GPU. In HotHardware’s February 2018 comparison, Zotac took a few narrow benchmark wins, but the reviewer preferred ASUS overall for its shorter card, single 8-pin power input, slightly lower system power use, and broader cooling and tuning features. This is a historical comparison, not a guide to present-day game performance or current prices.

What is being compared?

Both cards are custom versions of NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. HotHardware identified its ASUS sample as the ROG Strix Advanced Edition. The shared GPU specifications in the comparison were 2,432 CUDA cores, a 1,607 MHz base clock, a 1,683 MHz boost clock, and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory running at 8 GHz. ASUS’s official product article also identifies 2,432 CUDA cores and a 1,683 MHz stock boost clock; its higher OC-mode figures apply to particular Strix variants and modes, not every 1070 Ti.

The meaningful differences are in the board designs: physical size, power connectors, cooler and fan behavior, lighting, and control software. Neither card has a large built-in performance advantage over the other simply because it is the Strix or AMP Extreme model.

How did they perform in the 2018 tests?

HotHardware published its comparison on February 28, 2018. Its test system used an Intel Core i5-7600K, an MSI Z270 XPOWER Gaming Titanium motherboard, 16 GB of Corsair DDR4-2666 memory, Windows 10 Pro x64, and NVIDIA driver 390.77. The results below reflect that system, the tested samples, and the games, software, and settings used at the time; they are not current benchmarks.

Test Reported result
Unigine Superposition and VRMark The two custom cards were close. In the initial Superposition run, they were roughly 4–5% ahead of the GTX 1070 Founders Edition used as a comparison; Zotac scored narrow wins.
3DMark Time Spy and Fire Strike Ultra Time Spy was virtually a tie, with Zotac slightly ahead. In Fire Strike Ultra at 4K, both cards ran around 25 FPS and were about 10% ahead of the GTX 1070 Founders Edition comparison card.
Hitman (2016) The cards were comparable, with HotHardware reporting more than 60 FPS even at 4K and a very minor Zotac lead.
Rise of the Tomb Raider HotHardware reported smooth performance above 60 FPS at 1440p, with performance nearly halving at 4K. ASUS won this comparison.

The outlet also tested overclocking by raising the power and temperature targets, leaving voltage unchanged, and adjusting GPU and memory clocks until instability or visual artifacts appeared. Its tested Zotac sample reached a peak GPU clock of 2,050 MHz and its ASUS sample reached 2,063 MHz; both peaked at around 62°C. The reviewer considered the performance differences within benchmark margin of error. Those are sample-specific results under that procedure, not guaranteed clocks or temperatures for other cards.

What separates the board designs?

Size and case clearance

HotHardware listed the Zotac at 12.8 inches long and the ASUS at 11.73 inches. Zotac’s official specification page lists model ZT-P10710B-10P at 325 × 148 × 56.6 mm, with a 2.5-slot footprint. Before buying either card, check the specific case’s GPU clearance and allow for power-cable space; a card’s stated length does not account for every case obstruction.

Power connections and PSU guidance

HotHardware’s comparison describes two 8-pin power inputs on the Zotac and one on the ASUS. PSU recommendations differ by source: HotHardware gave 600 W for its comparison, while Zotac’s product page lists a 500 W recommended PSU for model ZT-P10710B-10P. These are attributed recommendations, not interchangeable guarantees for every PC. Check the exact card label or manual and account for the rest of the system before choosing a power supply.

Cooling, noise, and features

ASUS’s Strix feature set includes three wing-blade fans, a 2.5-slot heatsink, and FanConnect headers. ASUS also described its fans stopping at idle or light load as a 0 dB feature; that is the manufacturer’s claim. Zotac lists triple-fan IceStorm cooling for the AMP Extreme.

In HotHardware’s setup, both cards stopped their fans at low load. The outlet described gaming noise as modest, but said manually setting the fans to maximum was very loud. Tom’s Hardware’s December 2017 Zotac review criticized fan control and noise on its Zotac sample and noted its size and weight. These are different reviewers’ impressions from different samples and test conditions, not a universal noise ranking.

Which one should you choose?

For a system that can fit either card, the 2018 comparison does not show a meaningful out-of-box performance gap that should decide the purchase by itself. Choose based on the exact board’s fit and condition, connector layout, cooler behavior, and price.

  • Prefer the ASUS Strix if its shorter dimensions or single 8-pin input suit your build, or you value the cited FanConnect, Aura RGB, and GPU Tweak II features.
  • Consider the Zotac AMP Extreme if it fits your case and its cooler, lighting, and controls are preferable to you. Its small benchmark leads in some 2018 tests were not consistent across all results.
  • For either card, verify before purchase: exact model and dimensions, required power connectors, working condition, seller return terms, and current asking price. These are legacy cards, and the 2018 review’s prices and supply conditions do not establish today’s availability or value.

How to interpret the power and performance results

HotHardware measured total system power at the wall outlet, not power draw from the GPU alone. In its setup, the ASUS system used a few watts less than the Zotac system at idle and under load. The result is specific to the full test systems and does not establish a precise difference in card-only consumption.

The review tested Unigine Superposition, VRMark, 3DMark Time Spy and Fire Strike, and games including Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Hitman (2016), and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Different games, newer drivers, and different systems can produce different results. The figures are useful for understanding how closely these two models performed in that historical test, not for predicting frame rates in current games.
