Choose Extra if you expect to play games from the changing Game Catalog. Choose Premium if you will use the Classics Catalog, game trials, or cloud streaming. The best value depends on the features you will actually use—and, for catalog games, whether the titles you want are currently included.
What’s the difference between Essential, Extra, and Premium?
All three tiers include online multiplayer, monthly games, exclusive discounts and game content, 100 GB of cloud storage, and Share Play. Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium includes those benefits and adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming, and—on PlayStation’s US plan page—the Sony Pictures Catalog.

Which plan should you choose?
Choose Essential for the core membership benefits
Essential is the straightforward choice if you mainly want online multiplayer, the monthly games, and the other shared features. It avoids paying more for a catalog you may not use.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Choose Extra if you want to play games from the Game Catalog
Extra makes sense when you expect to try several games in its rotating Game Catalog, in addition to getting Essential’s benefits. Before subscribing, check the current catalog against the specific games you want. Catalog access is not permanent ownership: play depends on the game remaining available and your active subscription and other applicable conditions.
PlayStation says that, from January 2026, PS4 games will be added to the Game Catalog only intermittently. That makes it especially important not to assume a particular PS4 title will be added or remain available; check its current listing before choosing a plan for it.
Rank #2
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Choose Premium for classics, trials, or streaming
Premium is the fit if you want its Classics Catalog or game trials, or expect to use cloud streaming. If none of those features matters to you, the fact that Premium is the highest tier is not a reason by itself to pay for it. Streaming availability and supported devices are subject to territory and technical requirements.
How much do the plans cost in the US?
PlayStation’s US page listed these prices when checked. Prices, offers, and account-region availability can change, so confirm the amount shown for your account before purchase.
Rank #3
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
| Tier | 1 month | 3 months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 |
At those listed US prices, 12 separate monthly payments would total $131.88 for Essential, $203.88 for Extra, or $239.88 for Premium. Compared with those totals, the listed 12-month prices are lower by $51.89, $68.89, and $79.89, respectively. These are calculations from the prices above, assuming they stay unchanged and excluding promotions—not separate savings figures published by Sony.
Does Premium include cloud streaming, and what do you need?
Cloud streaming is a Premium benefit, not an Essential or Extra feature. PlayStation describes PS Plus availability on PS4 and PS5 and Premium streaming on PC in its getting-started information. Sony lists a minimum internet speed of 5 Mbps for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. The plan page notes that cloud streaming excludes overseas territories; confirm local availability and supported devices before treating streaming as a reason to upgrade.
Rank #4
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Is PS Plus Extra worth it?
Extra is worth considering if the current Game Catalog contains games you genuinely plan to play and the subscription cost makes sense for the term you expect to keep it. It is a weaker fit if you only want online play and monthly games, or if the titles that interest you are not currently available. Check the catalog before paying, and account for games leaving as well as games being added.
How to make the decision
- Start with the shared benefits. If online multiplayer and the common membership features meet your needs, compare Essential’s price with the higher tiers.
- Check the games you want. For Extra, confirm each desired title is currently in the Game Catalog. For Premium, decide whether you will use the Classics Catalog or trials.
- Consider how you will play. If cloud streaming is the reason for Premium, check territory, device support, and your connection against Sony’s listed minimum speeds.
- Compare the term you will actually buy. Use the price for your intended duration and account region, and verify current offers at checkout.
