Xbox Play Anywhere lets you buy a participating digital game and install it on supported Xbox and Windows devices; Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Xbox servers to compatible devices. Play Anywhere is about where you can use a game you own. Cloud Gaming is about playing through a stream, usually with an eligible Game Pass plan. A title can support both, but check its eligibility for each feature separately.

Xbox’s official Play Anywhere FAQ and Cloud Gaming page describe different eligibility rules. Neither feature covers every Xbox game.
What Xbox Play Anywhere gives you
Play Anywhere is an entitlement attached to certain digital games, not a streaming subscription. Buy a participating game digitally through the Xbox Store or Windows Store, and you can install and play it on supported Xbox consoles, Windows 10 or 11 PCs, and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds. The game must carry the Xbox Play Anywhere badge; a disc copy does not qualify.
Xbox describes the feature as “Buy once, play anywhere.” That means one eligible digital purchase can be used on the supported device types without paying an extra Play Anywhere fee. It does not mean every game is included for free, nor that every Xbox title participates.

Saves, add-ons, and achievements
Xbox says your progress can follow you between supported devices. Shared data includes game saves, add-ons, and achievements; purchased or earned downloadable content, including add-ons and season passes, is supported for owned Play Anywhere games. Your Gamerscore and achievements are shared rather than awarded as separate sets for different devices.
You cannot be signed into the same game on multiple supported devices at the same time. To confirm that a particular title qualifies, look for the Play Anywhere badge or check Xbox’s current participating-games information.

What Xbox Cloud Gaming gives you
Cloud Gaming streams a game to your device rather than installing and running the console version locally. Xbox says most cloud-playable titles come from the Game Pass library. Its current US guidance lists Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential for most cloud play. Select free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Xbox also allows streaming of select games you own or buy outside Game Pass.
So Cloud Gaming is not simply “all Game Pass games on any device,” and it is not limited to subscription-catalog games. Check the live cloud library to see whether the game you want is streamable and whether it is available through your plan, as a free-to-play title, or through ownership.

Devices, region, and setup
Xbox lists support across several device categories, including PCs, phones, tablets, consoles, select smart TVs, Fire TV devices, select VR headsets, and web browsers. Availability depends on device and region. For browser play on xbox.com, Xbox lists supported browsers such as Edge, Chrome, and Safari.
Xbox’s setup guidance calls for a supported device and region, an internet connection, and a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. Select games have touch controls, so a separate controller is not always required. If you plan to use a controller, check compatibility for your specific device and game.

On its US Cloud Gaming page, Xbox gives 10 Mbps as the minimum download speed and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. It recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are Xbox’s stated connection guidelines, not guarantees of low latency or a particular image quality: performance also depends on connection, location, and device.
Streaming trade-offs
Because Cloud Gaming streams the game, it can let you play without installing the console version on the device you are using. The trade-off is dependence on a suitable connection and Xbox’s streaming service. Xbox warns that streamed play can have limitations such as differences in video resolution, audio outputs, or save storage.

Game availability, features, plans, supported regions, and devices can change. Before subscribing or choosing hardware for a specific game, check Xbox’s current Cloud Gaming page and its live library and support information.

- Choose Play Anywhere if you want to buy a participating digital game once, install it on supported Xbox and Windows devices, and carry saves and eligible add-ons between them.
- Choose Cloud Gaming if you want to stream a supported title to a compatible device instead of installing the console version there, or stream a select game you own.
- Check both separately if you have a particular game in mind. A Play Anywhere badge confirms the purchase entitlement, not cloud-streaming access; cloud availability does not make a game Play Anywhere.
In practical terms, Play Anywhere suits players who want local installs across supported devices. Cloud Gaming suits players whose device, internet connection, and game are supported for streaming. Some titles offer both options, but the features are not interchangeable.
