Tyrese Maxey is Philadelphia’s emerging franchise face; Allen Iverson remains one of the 76ers’ defining legends. Maxey led the team in scoring and assists in 2024–25, but Iverson’s completed résumé includes the 2001 NBA MVP, four scoring titles and a trip to the NBA Finals. Maxey’s future is still being written, so “the new Iverson” is better understood as a question about role and influence—not a claim that their careers or accomplishments are equal.
How they arrived in Philadelphia
Their paths to the 76ers began at different points in the draft. The team lists Maxey as the 21st pick in 2020 and Iverson as the first overall pick in 1996. Draft position does not determine a player’s eventual importance, but it sets the context for their very different starting expectations.

The averages are profile snapshots, not a matched-season comparison: the figures cover different career lengths and eras. They should not be read as a controlled measure of which guard was better at the same stage or under the same conditions.
What makes Maxey Philadelphia’s emerging face
Philadelphia’s 2025–26 player profile reports that Maxey led the 76ers in the 2024–25 season with 26.3 points and 6.1 assists per game (76ers profile). That combination makes the case about more than scoring: he was also the team’s leading provider of assists. The NBA’s 2025–26 season preview explicitly raised whether it was time for him to become the franchise face (NBA season preview).

Those figures describe one season, not a settled historical standing. Maxey is an active player with time to add to his record; the question is whether he can sustain leadership and build a body of playoff achievement and honors that places him among the franchise’s defining figures.
What makes Iverson’s legacy established
Iverson’s case rests on achievements accumulated across a completed career. The 76ers identify him as the 2001 NBA MVP and a Hall of Famer, while the Associated Press reports that he won four scoring titles and led Philadelphia to the 2001 Finals (76ers alumni profile; Associated Press, April 12, 2024).

AP also reported that Iverson averaged 31.1 points per game in 2001, the season of his MVP award and the Finals run. Philadelphia lost the Finals to the Lakers, but reaching that stage remains a central part of his franchise story. A single season figure should not be mistaken for his career average or used alone to rank players across eras.
How their games and influence connect
The strongest documented connection is cultural rather than a claim of identical playing styles or careers. The Associated Press described Iverson’s style as an influence on later players, including Maxey. That makes Iverson part of the lineage around Maxey, but it does not establish that Maxey is a direct substitute or replica.

Iverson also spoke about the relationship with coach Larry Brown that helped shape the team’s 2001 run. AP quoted him after the April 2024 sculpture ceremony: “Me and Coach didn’t see eye-to-eye on things,” Iverson said. “But he wanted the same thing that I wanted out of my career and our team goals. Once I bought into that, that’s what turned me into an MVP basketball player. That turned us to a team that were winners, that could go to the finals and compete with the best teams.” The account offers a glimpse of how Iverson understood that team chapter; it is not a basis for assuming Maxey’s leadership path will be the same.

Not in the sense of having matched Iverson’s career achievements. Iverson’s MVP, four scoring titles, Hall of Fame recognition and 2001 Finals run are established parts of 76ers history. Maxey’s present claim is different: he led the team in points and assists in 2024–25 and is a plausible emerging face of the franchise.

The comparison is most useful when it keeps both ideas in view. Maxey can carry the team’s identity forward while Iverson remains a singular historical standard. Whether Maxey eventually builds a legacy comparable in stature is an open question, not something the available season figures can settle.
