First identify whether the problem is on an Xbox console or in the Xbox app on a Windows PC; the recovery steps differ. Then check whether the game is missing, its installation stops, or it installs but will not launch. Confirm the signed-in account can access it, check compatibility and availability, and use only the recovery steps for your platform.
Start by identifying the platform and failure
Write down the exact error message or code before changing settings. Note whether you are using an Xbox console or the Xbox app on Windows, and which of these describes the problem:
- The game does not appear in your library or Store search.
- The download or installation will not start or complete.
- The game is installed but fails to launch.
Also check whether other games install or launch. If only one title is affected, its account access, compatibility, or availability may be the issue; if several are affected, report that pattern when seeking support.
Check account access, compatibility, and availability
Confirm the account can access the game
Make sure you are signed in with the account that owns the game or otherwise has access to it. For a missing game on Xbox One, Microsoft recommends checking My games & apps > Ready to install. Microsoft’s Xbox library guidance covers finding downloadable content and games.

Verify that the game is available for this device and account
A game or app can be available on one device but not another, including Xbox consoles, because of compatibility. Store visibility can also be affected by the account’s country or region, family settings, sign-in state, or a game no longer being available. Check the game’s current Microsoft Store listing for the device you are using and confirm you are signed into the intended account. Microsoft explains these possibilities in its guidance for apps or games that cannot be found or installed from Microsoft Store.
If the problem is on an Xbox console
Use the console branch only for console problems: Windows Store commands and Windows app reset instructions do not apply to an Xbox console. Check account access and the game’s current device-specific Store listing first. If the game is missing on Xbox One, look in My games & apps > Ready to install.

If the game still will not install or launch, keep the exact error code and console model for Xbox Support. The available general guidance does not establish one reset sequence that is appropriate for every console error, so avoid applying a broad reset without a diagnosis. Check the current official support page for the specific code rather than assuming the cause is storage, networking, or hardware.
If the problem is in the Xbox app on Windows
Reset Microsoft Store when Store installation is failing
- Close the Microsoft Store and Xbox app if they are open.
- Open the Windows Start menu, type
wsreset.exe, and run it. Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting guidance describes this as a way to reset the Store cache: Microsoft Store app and game troubleshooting. - When the Store opens again, retry the installation from the Store Library or the game’s product page.
Update, repair, or reinstall the affected app
For a Windows app problem, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking for updates, repairing or resetting the app, and reinstalling it where appropriate. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the affected app, and use Advanced options if available to find Repair or Reset. Repair attempts to fix the app while preserving its data; Reset can remove app data, so use it only when appropriate. If those options do not resolve the issue, reinstall the app. Microsoft’s steps are described in repairing apps and programs in Windows.

If Windows recently installed updates, restart the PC before trying again. Then use the Microsoft Store Library or the Xbox PC app to find and install the game. Microsoft identifies the Xbox PC app as an official way to access and install PC games, including available Game Pass titles.

Using the right account and official library helps distinguish an installation problem from a game that is not available to that account or device.

- Exact error code and message.
- Game title and whether it is missing, will not install, or will not launch.
- Device model and, for a PC, Windows version.
- Account or entitlement context, without sharing your password.
- Installation location and available free storage.
- Whether other games install or launch on the same device.
- Steps already tried and what happened after each one.
Do not buy a drive, network device, disc, or repair part based only on a game failing to install or launch. The symptom alone does not establish a hardware fault; identify a specific storage, network, disc, or component problem first.
