Your Xbox disc still works, but claiming a disc-to-digital license does not turn it into an unrestricted digital purchase. If an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc qualifies and you claim the license, you can launch the game without the disc inserted. Microsoft nevertheless conditions that limited license on continued possession of the qualifying disc, and says access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer have it.
What changes when you claim the digital license?
The claim adds a limited digital entitlement for an eligible disc-based game. After a successful claim, the game appears in your Xbox library and can be played without putting the disc in the drive. The disc is not exchanged, disabled, or erased: Xbox says it continues to work as before. Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement describes the disc and digital entitlement as coexisting.
The important qualification is that the entitlement is still tied to the qualifying disc. Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules describe the license as limited access, permit revalidation, and say access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess the disc. The license cannot be transferred separately from it.
How to claim it and check whether your disc qualifies
- Sign in on a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with an optical disc drive.
- Insert an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc and launch the game. If the title qualifies, look for the console prompt to accept a digital license.
- Accept the prompt to claim the entitlement. The game should then appear in your Xbox library and launch without the disc inserted.
Xbox says there is one revokable digital license per game disc. Its product information describes the feature for select markets and excludes Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs. Eligibility can vary by technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors, and Microsoft may add or remove supported titles. A complete live list of eligible games and markets is not provided in the cited materials, so the prompt on your console and current Xbox terms are the practical checks for your particular disc and region. Can you sell or give away the disc afterward?
Do not assume you can keep the digital game access after handing the disc to someone else. Microsoft says the license depends on continued possession of the qualifying disc and that access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess it. The rules do not describe a guaranteed transfer procedure that would let you separate the digital entitlement from the disc.
How this differs from installing a game from disc
A normal disc installation is not a disc-to-digital claim. With an ordinary install, the game files may be on the console, but the disc remains the play credential and must be in the drive to launch the game. The separate entitlement claim is what permits disc-free launching, subject to its possession and revalidation conditions. Xbox’s Series X FAQ explains the standard disc-play requirement.

Does the claim include the PC version or cloud gaming?
Not automatically. Xbox says the entitlement can provide digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported. Those benefits depend on the game and service; the disc claim is not a universal promise of PC installation, handheld play, or streaming for every eligible title. Xbox’s announcement states the supported-title qualification.
