Neither store is better for every PC gamer. GOG is the stronger fit if you want DRM-free single-player games, downloadable offline installers, and the option to play without its client. Steam is the clearer choice if you want documented library sharing through Steam Families or prefer its particular community and game features. For refunds, GOG advertises a longer window, while Steam publishes a more specific standard rule tied to both time since purchase and playtime. Your best choice depends on the games you want and how you expect to access them.

Choose GOG if offline single-player access is your priority
GOG’s published standard is unusually direct: games released on the service must not include DRM or copy protection. Its developer guidance says single-player play should work offline without Galaxy authentication or even the Galaxy client. GOG’s 2022 statement puts the policy plainly: “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline.” GOG’s user guarantees
That standard applies to the offline single-player path, not to features that inherently need a connection. Multiplayer, friends services, leaderboards, and other online-only functions still depend on their services being available.
Offline installers and Galaxy
You can download offline installers and bonus content from GOG’s website. That makes it possible to keep installer files and install a supported game without using Galaxy. GOG says Galaxy is optional for accessing single-player offline mode; it can still help manage installations and updates, and offers supported features such as cloud saves, update rollbacks, achievements, and cross-platform library and friends management. For a particular purchase, check the game’s store listing and requirements before relying on a specific offline capability. A DRM-free single-player game is not the same thing as an offline version of every online feature.
Choose Steam if family sharing is important
Steam’s documented advantage for sharing is Steam Families. Valve says users can play games from up to five close family members’ libraries. The shared access is a temporary license; it does not transfer permanent ownership of a game to another account. Steamworks: Steam Families

Check the rules and the particular game’s support before planning around a shared copy. Family sharing is a way to access eligible titles, not a transferable license that turns one purchase into several owned copies.
Compare the exact game’s online and community features
Store-level labels do not tell you whether a specific game supports the multiplayer, friends, cloud saves, achievements, or other functions you care about. GOG’s developer materials explain that these features are implemented through each platform’s developer tools. They describe Galaxy crossplay between Galaxy and Steam users as a Galaxy-specific feature, while some Steamworks social functions have no direct Galaxy counterpart. Both platforms provide storage interfaces for cloud or PC synchronization, but that does not mean every game implements them on both stores. GOG developer documentation

- For multiplayer, verify which services the game uses and whether players on the two stores can play together.
- For cloud saves, achievements, or social tools, confirm that the feature is available for that game on the storefront you intend to use.
- If you rely on friends or community features, compare the game pages and developer notes rather than inferring support from the client alone.
Understand the refund rules before buying
GOG advertises a refund within 30 days if a game does not work as expected. That statement appears on its About page; it should not be read as a guarantee that every purchase qualifies regardless of circumstances. Review GOG’s current information and the detailed policy applicable to your purchase.
Valve’s standard Steam refund rule is a request within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of playtime. Valve says you may still submit a request outside those guidelines for review. The policy has separate rules for DLC, in-game purchases, bundles, gifts, preorders, and Early Access; for a preorder that is not playable before release, the refund period starts at release, while Early Access playtime counts. Local consumer rights may provide additional protections. Check Valve’s full Steam refund policy for the terms relevant to your purchase.

Make the choice game by game
- Start with the title you want. Confirm that it is sold on the store you are considering, then check that game’s requirements and supported features.
- Decide how you need to access it. If keeping an installer and playing offline without a storefront client is central, look for the GOG version and its game-specific requirements.
- Check who else needs access. If sharing with close family is important, confirm the game’s eligibility and your household’s fit with Steam Families.
- Verify online dependencies. Check multiplayer, crossplay, cloud saves, friends, achievements, and other features on the exact store version you plan to buy.
- Compare the applicable refund terms. Consider the purchase date, playtime, and any game-specific or jurisdictional rules before treating a refund window as a safety net.
You do not need to force every purchase into one ecosystem. The relevant trade-off is access to the particular game and features you want, not a universal ranking of the storefronts.
