No. Proton is a compatibility tool for running Windows games through Steam on Linux; it is not a setting for PS5 console games. If you meant a Linux PC running a Steam game, Proton can be selected per game. For a PS5 console, use PlayStation’s own update and troubleshooting options instead.
What Proton does—and why it does not apply to PS5
Valve describes Proton as a tool used with the Steam client to let Windows-exclusive games run on Linux. Its configuration is managed in Steam, not in the PS5 console interface. Valve’s Proton project documentation explains the tool’s purpose and its launch-option configuration.
Sony’s support guidance covers PS5 system software and game updates separately from its guidance for PlayStation games on PC. A PS5 console does not provide Proton settings for improving its games. Sony’s PC gaming support concerns PC play, not applying Proton to a PS5.
If you meant a Windows game on a Linux PC
There is no single best Proton version or override for every game. Compatibility depends on the title and system, and a setting that helps with one specific issue is not a guaranteed performance improvement for another game.

Check whether the game needs Proton
First determine whether the game has a native Linux version. Native Linux games do not need Proton. For Windows games, Steam Play provides compatibility-tool support; the available functionality can vary by title. Ubuntu’s Proton/Steam Play guide explains the distinction and cautions that unsupported games vary in functionality.
Select a compatibility tool for one game

In the Steam client, open the game’s Properties.

Open the Compatibility section and enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, if available.

Choose a tool version to test for that game. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether it addresses the problem.
This is a per-game troubleshooting choice, not a universal tuning recommendation. Ubuntu’s guide documents selecting a compatibility tool through the game’s Compatibility properties and recommends checking title compatibility.

Use launch options only for a documented issue
Steam lets you enter launch options in the game’s Properties. Valve documents Proton runtime overrides as environment-variable options followed by %command%. Use an override only when you have a specific, applicable reason; otherwise, leave it unspecified so Steam uses its defaults. Valve’s instructions are in the Proton project documentation.

Check compatibility information for the particular game and identify the symptom you are trying to fix.

Confirm the selected tool or override is relevant to that symptom.

If a change makes the game less stable or does not help, remove the override or return to the previous compatibility-tool selection.

If you meant a game running on a PS5 console
Use console-specific maintenance rather than Proton configuration. Sony’s system-software instructions give this update path: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. From there, check for and install available system software updates. Sony’s PS5 system software guide provides the update steps.
For a game that will not start or is behaving unexpectedly, Sony’s game-start troubleshooting includes restarting the console, updating the game, and reinstalling where appropriate. Follow the steps for the specific symptom rather than treating them as Proton settings.
If “PS5” means a controller connected to a Linux PC
That is a different setup from playing a game on the PS5 console. Proton may be relevant to a Windows game launched through Steam on Linux, while controller support is a separate question. Sony documents supported input options for PlayStation games on PC in its PC gaming support information; the title alone does not establish that this is the configuration you mean.
