In Black Ops 6 Round-Based Zombies, survival depends on more than landing shots: Essence opens routes and buys, Salvage improves gear, and open space gives you room to escape a horde. This beginner-friendly guide explains those systems and uses Liberty Falls as a flexible example—not a mandatory speedrun route—so you can make early decisions that fit your run.
What should you spend Essence and Salvage on?
Essence and Salvage are separate resources with different uses. Essence is the currency for opening routes and buying services such as perks, Pack-a-Punch upgrades, ammunition, weapons and armor. Salvage is used at the Arsenal to improve weapon rarity or add Ammo Mods, and at the Crafting Table to make tactical, lethal and support equipment. Treyarch’s Terminus overview describes the core systems; exact costs and availability depend on what is open in your match.
Think about what your next purchase solves. Spending Essence to reach a useful station or gain a defensive option may matter more than buying the first upgrade you can afford. Salvage can strengthen a weapon or give you equipment for a difficult situation, so avoid treating either resource as a reason to make every available purchase immediately.
How do you stay alive when a horde closes in?
Space is a survival resource. Treyarch recommends learning areas that leave room to maneuver. When zombies pursue you, gather them into a group and keep moving through open space—a method players call “training”—rather than letting the horde pin you in a tight room or dead end. A clear escape path matters more than standing still to fight efficiently.

A Decoy Grenade can draw zombies together with its sound, giving you a more concentrated target and helping conserve ammunition. Use the pause it creates to reposition or deal damage, rather than assuming it makes a confined area safe. You can also check dropped equipment and armor plates: some drops must be picked up, while others can replenish as you move over them, according to the official Liberty Falls guide.
How should you upgrade a weapon?
Weapon rarity and Pack-a-Punch are distinct upgrades that can complement each other. The Liberty Falls guide says rarity affects weapon damage; the Terminus overview describes Pack-a-Punch as increasing a weapon’s potency and ammunition reserves. Consider those upgrades alongside access to routes, perks and defensive needs rather than following a universal purchase order. The official guidance does not establish one order that is best for every map or run.

How can you use Liberty Falls’ mid-game layout?
For Rounds 5–8, the official guide recommends gathering Essence and Salvage for later spending. It points players toward Hilltop and Hill Street, describes the Alamo rooftop as a useful place to hold position or transition between paths, and identifies the Church as the route to Pack-a-Punch.
That guide recommends reaching the Church around Round 9–10 with at least 5,000 Essence and a decent weapon. Treat those figures as its Liberty Falls recommendation, not a requirement or guarantee: your route, resources and match situation may differ. The same guide notes that weapon rarity raises the damage of a Pack-a-Punched weapon, making it worth considering how your weapon upgrades fit together.

What are GobbleGums, and when should you use them?
GobbleGums are match consumables that provide a bonus or ability. The official GobbleGum guide says they can be earned by playing Zombies or included in Zombies-focused bundles. Pick a pack that suits your objective: the guide gives quest-focused and challenge-focused examples.
Read the effect before using one. Some GobbleGums affect only you or your held weapon; others affect your squad, and power-ups can benefit the living team. Restrictions can change, particularly in Grief, so check the current in-game description instead of relying on an old list of mode restrictions.

Directed Mode guides you between Main Quest objectives and limits the round ceiling, while Standard leaves progression pacing to you. The official Reckoning Directed Mode guide, published September 4, 2025, describes a maximum of Round 15 until that map’s Main Quest is complete. That cap is specific to the guide’s map and mode context; check the current game for availability and rules.

Choose Directed if you want signposting while learning quest objectives. Choose Standard if you want to set your own pace and decide how long to continue. As Call of Duty Staff put it in the Reckoning guide, “There’s no wrong way to play Round-Based Zombies, so long as you play to survive.”
Is exfil required?
No. Exfil is an option if you want to attempt to leave rather than continue the match. The official Liberty Falls guide’s ten-round beginner route describes an exfil opportunity after Round 10, initiated from the Pump and Pay area and followed by a timed extraction fight. That is one map-specific route, not a rule for every map or mode; follow the in-game prompt if you decide to try it.
Which details may change over time?
Core explanations of Essence, Salvage, weapon upgrades and maneuvering space appear in official materials from August 2024, while the launch overview of Augments and perks dates to October 2024. That October 17, 2024 overview listed eight Perk-a-Colas and 48 Augments at launch, with up to six Augment options per Perk-a-Cola—three Minor and three Major. Those are launch-era counts, not a verified current inventory total.
