Best Classic-Style MMORPGs to Play While You Wait for Monsters & Memories

M&M is playable in Early Access, but classic MMO alternatives offer different trade-offs: EverQuest-era fidelity, solo-friendly Norrath, or flexible skill builds.

Monsters & Memories is playable now: its Early Access began October 1, 2026. But the developers say it is incomplete and remains in active development, so players who want a different old-school MMO experience—or simply more time for M&M to mature—have good alternatives. For early EverQuest progression, start with Project 1999; for classic EverQuest presentation with more solo and small-group flexibility, look at EverQuest Legends; and for skill-build experimentation, consider Project Gorgon.

At a glance: which classic-style MMO fits you?

Game What “classic-style” means here Solo and group play State and payment
Project 1999 A community project built around the classic EverQuest experience and its early progression arc, ending at Velious. Its official About page does not establish current solo expectations. Legacy EverQuest server project. Current access requirements and payment details are not stated on the reviewed About page.
EverQuest Legends A publisher-backed adaptation of the 1999 game, retaining classic presentation while adding modern systems. Designed for solo play, groups of four, and raids of up to eight. Launched for PC July 28, 2026; the publisher describes a monthly subscription.
Project Gorgon A newer game with old-school appeal and skill combinations rather than only predetermined classes. Current solo and group details are not established here. Current access, price, and operating status should be checked on its official site.
Monsters & Memories A new MMO drawing on classic-era design, now in Early Access rather than merely an upcoming game. All classes are available; the FAQ does not establish a general solo-play guarantee. Early Access began October 1, 2026; $15 USD monthly plus applicable taxes.

There is no single checklist that defines a “classic MMO.” For this comparison, the useful distinctions are whether a game recreates an older era, how much it accommodates solo play, and whether it is a legacy server, an adaptation, or a new game with classic-inspired design. Comparable current population figures are not established for these games, so population should not decide this ranking.

Project 1999: closest to the early EverQuest progression arc

Project 1999 is the most direct choice if your idea of an old-school MMORPG is early EverQuest progression and server structure. Its stated mission is to recreate the classic feeling of the original game, beginning with Classic content and following a similar release timeline. The project says its progression will stop at Velious rather than continue through later eras.

There is also a Red server using the same framework with modifications for classic PvP. That makes it a distinct option for players who want player-versus-player conflict rather than the standard progression experience. Project 1999 is not an official Daybreak product; its site says it is not affiliated with Daybreak.

Choose it for historical-era fidelity, not for a promise of modern convenience. The reviewed About page does not confirm current access requirements, server populations, or installation steps, so check the project’s current official information before setting it up. Solo expectations are likewise not specified by that page.

EverQuest Legends: classic Norrath with smaller-group options

EverQuest Legends is the strongest fit if you want the visual identity and setting of classic EverQuest but do not want every activity to depend on a large group. Daybreak Games announced its PC launch for July 28, 2026, describing it as a casual, solo-friendly version of the 1999 game.

  • DYNAMIC GAMEBOARD: Players move their figures around the board exploring Neverwinter. The board builds and changes, revealing mysterious places and clues as players solve puzzles that unlock locations

What carries over—and what changes

The publisher says Legends retains classic graphics, zones, effects, loot, and music, while combining them with modern systems. Its play structure is deliberately more flexible than a strict large-party model: you can play solo, form groups of four, or take part in raids of up to eight. Characters can select up to three active classes.

That makes Legends an adaptation, not a server intended to reproduce the original game’s rules unchanged. It has a monthly subscription, according to the publisher. Pick it when classic EverQuest presentation matters more than strict historical fidelity and solo or small-group access is a priority.

Project Gorgon: try an old-school MMO built around skill combinations

Project Gorgon offers a different kind of classic-style appeal. Its official site listing describes a skill-based leveling model in which players combine skills instead of relying only on predetermined classes. That is a good reason to consider it if character experimentation sounds more appealing than choosing a fixed class identity.

Current playability, price, content state, and server status are not established here. Check the official Project Gorgon site for those details before deciding whether it suits you. Treat it as the build-flexibility pick, rather than assuming it follows EverQuest’s specific era or group rules.

Monsters & Memories is available now, but still in development

The “while you wait” part of the question has changed: M&M’s Early Access started October 1, 2026. Its FAQ calls Early Access the commercial initial launch, but says the game continues toward version 1.0 with only a subset of planned zones and races. In a September 15, 2026 update, developer Shawn Lord put the status plainly: “The game is not complete and development will continue as it has been – though, likely a bit faster.”

What Early Access currently includes

The FAQ lists a level 1–60 path, 28 zones, all classes, and nine playable races. It gives a monthly fee of $15 USD plus applicable taxes, with no region-adjusted pricing. If you want to play M&M itself now, those are the scope and subscription details to weigh against the fact that development continues.

DandD Dungeon Board Game
  • D&D Board game
  • Play time: 45+ minutes
  • 1 rulebook, 1 game board, 2 dice, 165 cards, 8 hero standees, 139 die-cut tokens

Current PC recommendations

The FAQ’s current recommended guidance is Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer, 16 GB of RAM, a relatively modern CPU, and a GTX 1060 with 6 GB of VRAM or equivalent. The developers say requirements remain limited because optimization is ongoing, so treat these as current recommendations, not final minimum specifications.

How to read the player-count figure

The M&M team reported 8–12,000 unique players per month on its Closed Alpha and Beta live servers for most of 2026. This is a developer-reported monthly unique-player figure, not a concurrent-user count and not the current Early Access population. It cannot be used as a like-for-like comparison with the other games here.

Choose by the experience you want

  • Pick Project 1999 if classic EverQuest progression and its early-era endpoint matter most.
  • Pick EverQuest Legends if you want classic EverQuest’s setting and presentation with explicit solo and small-group options.
  • Consider Project Gorgon if combining skills and experimenting with builds is the draw; verify current access and price first.
  • Play Monsters & Memories now if you want the new game itself and accept an incomplete Early Access release, continued development, and a monthly subscription.
