Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA used PC component can be a sensible competitive-gaming purchase, but only when you verify the exact part, confirm it fits your build, see credible evidence it works under load, and have a practical way to return it if it fails. A desktop boot alone is not enough—especially for a graphics card, whose faults may appear only during a demanding game or benchmark.
Start with the exact part, not the listing headline
Ask for the manufacturer and full model, and for a graphics card, its memory size and board partner. Request clear photos of the actual component, its connectors, and any labels or SKU information. Similar names can describe meaningfully different hardware, so compare the photos and identifying details with the seller’s claim before paying. PCWorld’s 2026 used-parts guide and Get PC Parts’ GPU buying guide both stress checking the specific item rather than relying on a broad product family.
Check compatibility with the whole build: motherboard, CPU, case clearance, power supply, and intended display connections. For a CPU, confirm the motherboard socket and supported CPU/BIOS combination. For RAM, check generation, capacity, speed, and kit configuration against the motherboard. For a graphics card, make sure its size, power connectors, and display outputs work for your setup. If a modular PSU is involved, verify that the cables are the correct ones for that exact PSU; modular cables are not universally interchangeable.
Ask what “tested” actually means
Ask the seller what they did, for how long, and whether the component was tested under the kind of load it will face. A GPU that reaches the desktop has not thereby been shown stable in a game. A useful demonstration shows the actual item operating, ideally with a current date or another detail agreed with the seller. Video can support a claim, but it is not proof immune to editing, and a seller’s assurance is not a substitute for clear return terms.

- Stronger evidence: a demonstration or test record identifying the exact component and showing it operating under load.
- Weak evidence: “untested,” “worked when removed,” stock photos, a brief power-on, or a desktop-only boot offered as proof of gaming stability.
- Walk-away signals: evasive answers, mismatched model details, refusal to show the actual item, or a price so low that the seller will not explain it.
For competitive gaming, use benchmarks for the exact GPU and a similar system as a reference, then judge the card in the actual game, resolution, settings, and frame-rate target you care about. A benchmark or successful boot cannot guarantee a particular frame rate, latency, or tournament-ready experience. There is no universal competitive frame-rate threshold that applies across games, monitors, and players.
Compare the risk, price, and recourse
Compare the exact model and configuration with recent completed-sale prices, not its original MSRP or a vague family name. Factor condition, missing accessories, required cables, and the cost of replacing the part into the comparison. A discount only makes sense if you can absorb possible repair costs, downtime, or replacement.

Read the live listing’s return policy before paying: check the return window, the condition and testing requirements, who pays return shipping, and what evidence is needed for a claim. Terms vary by seller and location. Do not assume a manufacturer’s warranty transfers to a second owner; confirm transferability, remaining term, proof-of-purchase requirements, and regional restrictions with the manufacturer or seller. There is no universal transferable-warranty rule established by the available guidance.
Inspect and test a graphics card promptly
Get PC Parts’ step-by-step GPU test guide recommends a 20–30 minute load. Treat that as practical guidance from that publisher, not a universal laboratory standard. Start testing as soon as the card arrives and while you can still return it.

- Ultra-quiet UL-certified USB fan designed to cool various electronics and components.
- Features a multi-speed controller to set the fan’s speed to optimal noise and airflow levels.
- Dual-ball bearings have a lifespan of 67,000 hours and allows the fans to be laid flat or stand upright.
- USB plug can power the fan through USB ports found behind popular AV electronics and game consoles.
- Fan Size: 5.5 x 5.5 x 1 in. | Airflow: 57 CFM | Noise: 18 dBA | Bearings: Dual Ball
- Inspect before installation. Look for bent fan blades, damaged ports, missing screws, obvious board damage, signs of repair, or a bent card body. Photograph anything questionable before powering it on.
- Confirm identity. Use a hardware-information utility to check the model and memory size, then compare them with the listing.
- Set up safely. Install the card with the system powered off and follow the component and workstation manufacturers’ handling instructions. Install an appropriate current driver.
- Apply sustained load. Run a demanding game or looping graphics benchmark, then test the game and settings you actually intend to play.
- Watch for faults. Look for visible artifacts, repeated crashes, driver resets, lockups, unexpected reboots, abnormal fan behavior, or temperatures that keep climbing rather than stabilizing.
- Check every display output. Connect and verify each port you expect to use.
- Keep records. Save photos, video, test results, temperatures, seller messages, and packaging in case you need to make a return claim.
Temperature limits depend on the specific GPU and cooler design. Stability and temperature trends under load are more useful than applying one threshold to every card. Even a successful stress test can reveal only some faults; it cannot establish how much useful life remains.

| Component | What to verify | What a quick check can miss |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Exact model, socket and motherboard/BIOS support; inspect contacts or pins and ask for a working demonstration or stability evidence. | A brief power-on does not establish stability under sustained use. |
| Motherboard | Inspect CPU socket pins, slots, ports, and visible damage; ask which critical functions were tested. | A power-on does not exercise every slot, port, or controller. |
| RAM | Confirm generation, capacity, speed, and kit configuration against the motherboard; seek stability evidence. | Appearance does not prove that a kit is stable. |
| Storage | Ask for available drive-health data and consider remaining life; securely wipe or reset it before storing personal data. | A visual check cannot establish remaining life, and prior ownership creates a data-security concern. |
| Power supply (PSU) | Verify the exact model, credible history, and correct cables; include replacement cost in your decision. | Age, internal wear, and prior load are difficult to verify visually, and failure can affect other parts. |
Storage and PSUs deserve more caution than appearance alone can resolve. Do not open a PSU as a buyer test. If its history or correct cables cannot be established, price in replacement rather than treating a quick visual inspection as reassurance.

Handle components with ESD precautions
AMD warns that “Electrostatic discharge can cause a range of harmful and permanent damage to electronic components including the processor.” In its undated Processor Handling Guidance, AMD says an average person may feel an ESD event at 3,000 volts, an electronic component can be damaged with as little as 30 volts, and a visible static spark is 30,000 volts. Those figures are from AMD’s manufacturer guidance, not independent measurements for this article.
AMD recommends a grounded ESD mat, avoiding fleece or wool, working on a hard dissipative surface, and storing components in closed antistatic bags. If using a wrist strap, fit it snugly and connect it to unpainted grounded metal; merely touching painted case metal is not reliable grounding. Never install internal components while the system is powered.
