How to Check an NHL Player’s Game Status and Lineup Before Puck Drop

Use NHL.com’s daily projected-lineup report for lines, goalies and status notes, but check again near face-off: projections and injury reports are not the same as a confirmed lineup.

For the quickest league-wide check, open NHL.com’s daily Projected lineups, starting goalies for today page, find the game and team, then check the report again close to face-off. Its lines and goalie choices are projections, not automatic confirmation; read the separate status labels and any newer update before deciding whether a player is expected to dress.

Where to check a player’s status

On NHL.com, look for the daily Projected lineups, starting goalies for today report. It brings together projected forward lines, defense pairs, goalie names and team status notes, making it useful for scanning that day’s games in one place.

  1. Find the game and team. Go to the team’s section in the report.
  2. Check the projected units. Look through the forward lines, defense pairs and goalie listing for the player you’re following.
  3. Read the status categories separately. Note whether the player appears under Scratched, Injured or, where listed, Suspended.
  4. Read the accompanying status update. Look for developments and comments attributed to a coach or team activity.
  5. Check again near face-off. If the player’s availability matters, look for a newer update rather than relying on an earlier projection.

How to interpret the report

Projected does not mean confirmed

NHL.com labels its combinations as projected. Treat them as the report’s expectation, not a confirmed game lineup, unless a later update explicitly says the lineup has been confirmed. A projected goalie listing should be read the same way.

A status label is not the whole story

Scratched means the report lists a player as not dressing; NHL.com lists scratches separately from injured players. An Injured label or injury note is reported status information, but it does not by itself establish whether the player will play. Attribute the note to the report, and check its accompanying text for a clearer update.

Availability and the coach’s decision can differ

A player may be described as available while the coach has not decided whether to use them. For example, NHL.com’s October 3, 2026 report included that combination of details. In a case like this, distinguish the player’s reported availability from the coach’s decision and from the projected lineup. If the report calls someone a “game-time decision” or says no decision has been made, their status remains unresolved in that report.

When is a lineup officially submitted?

NHL Rule 5 says the visiting team submits its eligible-player list within five minutes after warm-up ends; the rule describes warm-up as taking place twenty minutes before face-off. The rule also limits participation to players on the submitted lineup. This is a procedure for submitting the list—not a guarantee that NHL.com or another public source will post an update at a particular minute.

What to do when the report is still uncertain

  • If the player is listed as a game-time decision, or the report says the coach has not decided, do not treat the projection as confirmation.
  • If the player is under Scratched, read that as the report’s not-dressing listing, not as an injury diagnosis.
  • If the player appears in the projected units but also has an injury or availability note, read both parts and preserve any uncertainty.
  • When you need the latest practical answer, revisit the report close to face-off and look for a newer, clearly attributed update.
