1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safest way to protect progress depends on where you are playing: an original SNES cartridge, an emulator such as Snes9x, or a Super NES Classic Edition. Use the game’s intended save, keep a separate backup when you can, and treat save states or suspend points as separate snapshots that may restore older progress.
First, identify where your save lives
These platforms do not preserve progress in the same way. An original cartridge that supports saving typically keeps the game’s save in battery-backed SRAM. Snes9x stores the game’s ordinary save in an SRAM file, usually with the .srm extension, and stores save states separately. The Super NES Classic Edition uses in-game saves as well as suspend points, which are temporary or saved snapshots.
| Platform | Where progress is kept | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Original SNES cartridge | Battery-backed SRAM, on cartridges that support saving | A failing battery or cartridge fault can put the save at risk. Snes9x documentation discusses the underlying cartridge save mechanism; iFixit’s repair guide covers battery replacement. |
| Snes9x emulator | The game’s in-game save is typically in a .srm file; save states are separate files |
Loading an older state can replace SRAM contents with the older contents captured in that state. Snes9x documentation. |
| Super NES Classic Edition | In-game save data and separate suspend points | An unsaved temporary suspend point is deleted when the system is shut off or another game is started; resuming from a suspend point can also overwrite the game’s in-game save. Nintendo Support and Nintendo’s resume instructions. |
How to protect a save on an original SNES
Save through the game
Use the title’s own save points or save menu. Let the save operation finish before switching off the console. When practical, restart the game later and confirm that the file is still present; a save that appears successful once is not proof that a cartridge with a failing battery will retain it reliably.
When a save starts disappearing
Do not assume the game itself is to blame, and do not open the cartridge before preserving any remaining progress if you have a way to do so. A cartridge that supports battery-backed SRAM can lose save retention as its battery or board develops a fault. The correct repair depends on the cartridge’s actual board, so inspect or identify it before buying a replacement cell.

Battery replacement is a repair, not a normal saving step. The community-authored iFixit SNES cartridge battery guide says the cell is usually a CR2032 and soldered in; that is not a guarantee for every cartridge. Opening the shell requires a 3.8 mm Gamebit screwdriver bit, as shown in iFixit’s cartridge disassembly guide. Battery work involves soldering, and replacing a cell without preserving the existing save may put the remaining data at risk.
How to protect a save in Snes9x
Keep the in-game save and save state distinct
Save through the game’s own menu or save point. Snes9x writes that SRAM-backed game save to a file, typically .srm. Make a separate copy of that file as a backup, ideally somewhere outside the emulator’s working folder so it is not replaced along with the active copy.

A save state is different: it captures a broader snapshot of the emulated game at an arbitrary moment. The Snes9x project describes this as “saving the whole game state anywhere you want, beyond the game designers’ intent.” That convenience can help before a difficult section, but the snapshot can also contain the SRAM contents as they were when the state was made.
Load states carefully
Loading an older Snes9x state can roll back the SRAM contents held in the state and replace a newer in-game save. Before loading a state, make an independent copy of the current .srm file. After loading, check the game’s save menu or file list before continuing; if it shows older progress, restore the backup rather than saving over it.

Exact menus, file locations, and backup behavior differ among Snes9x ports and versions. The important distinction remains: the state file is not a substitute for an independent backup of the game’s SRAM save.

Save a temporary suspend point into a slot
- While playing, slide the console’s Reset switch up to create a temporary suspend point.
- Move the point to a saved slot.
- Press Y to save it.
Nintendo says a game can have up to four saved suspend points. A temporary point is not saved automatically: Nintendo warns that it will be deleted if the console is turned off or another game is started before you save it into a slot.

Check which version of progress you are loading
The game’s in-game save and a suspend point are separate pieces of progress. Nintendo warns that resuming from a suspend point may overwrite the in-game save data, which cannot be recovered. If you have played past the point captured in a suspend snapshot, think carefully before resuming it: you may replace the newer in-game save with the older snapshot’s progress.

A simple routine for a long game
- Use the game’s intended save whenever it offers one.
- On Snes9x, back up the active
.srmfile independently before loading an older state. - On Super NES Classic Edition, save a temporary suspend point into a slot before shutting down or starting another game, and avoid resuming an older point without considering what it may replace.
- On original hardware, verify that saves persist after a later restart. If they do not, preserve remaining data and identify the cartridge board before considering battery repair.
