Plan a New Zealand hike by matching the route’s length, grade, terrain and season to your group’s ability, then confirm bookings, transport, current conditions and the gear needed for that specific trip. In New Zealand, hiking is also commonly called tramping; the Department of Conservation (DOC) uses both terms.

Choose a track that fits your group and your plans

Start with the experience you want—such as a short day walk or a multi-day journey—then compare specific tracks by duration, difficulty, terrain, season, hazards, accommodation and transport. DOC describes the Great Walks as premier tracks. Its list includes the Abel Tasman Coast, Heaphy, Hump Ridge, Kepler, Lake Waikaremoana, Milford, Paparoa, Rakiura, Routeburn and Tongariro Northern Circuit, as well as the Whanganui Journey. Check DOC’s Great Walks information for current route details; names, logistics and booking rules are not interchangeable.

  • Length and time: Check the stated distance and typical duration, and allow for your party’s pace and breaks.
  • Grade and terrain: Make sure the track’s difficulty and conditions suit everyone going.
  • Season and hazards: Read the route-specific advice, including any seasonal warnings or skills required.
  • Overnight arrangements: Find out whether huts, campsites or other facilities need to be booked.
  • Transport: Plan how you will reach the trailhead and return from the finish, especially if the route has different endpoints.

Guided trips may offer more comfort, and local operators serve major towns near Great Walks, according to DOC. Check availability and details with the relevant operator before building a plan around a service.

Use the Routeburn to see why the details matter

DOC describes the Routeburn Track as 33 km one way, usually taking two to four days, with intermediate and advanced tramping track sections. Its page says conditions from May through October can be challenging and that attempting the track then requires the relevant skills. For the Great Walk season listed on the page reviewed—1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027—hut and campsite bookings are required. Confirm dates, conditions and rules on the current Routeburn Track page before travelling.

Confirm bookings and logistics before you commit

Check the exact track’s requirements and live facility availability before fixing your itinerary. At the time of the reviewed DOC booking page, bookings for Great Walks, huts, campsites and lodges were open for stays through 30 June 2027. DOC says bookings are first come, first served; it does not keep waiting lists for booked-out future facilities, and not all facilities can be booked. These details can change, so verify them on DOC’s booking portal.

In a release dated 26 March 2026, DOC said bookings for the 2026/27 season would open on staggered dates starting 12 May 2026 and advised people to prepare their booking account and have alternate plans. The release reported increased bookings over the previous year on four of the 11 Great Walks. For the season it discussed, Milford and Abel Tasman hut occupancy was around 95%, while Kepler hut occupancy was 91%. These are dated figures, not a guide to present availability. See DOC’s 26 March 2026 booking announcement for its original context.

Choose gear for the route, duration and conditions

There is no single pack list suited to every New Zealand hike. DOC groups its gear lists by activity and duration, including Great Walks, short walks under three hours, day hikes under eight hours, overnight and multi-day tramps, alpine trips and other activities. Start with the list closest to your trip, then adapt it to the forecast, terrain, season and time away. DOC’s gear lists provide the activity-specific starting point.

Plan navigation and emergency communication

DOC says detailed maps and navigation tools are essential, and that walkers need to know how to use them. Download maps for offline use before entering places without phone or internet reception. If you navigate by phone, carry a paper backup and ensure the battery will last. Read DOC’s backcountry navigation advice as part of your preparation.
