For a mainstream chocolate brand with clearly documented New Zealand production, Whittaker’s is the strongest choice in this comparison: the company says it is family-owned and makes all its products at its Porirua factory. Cadbury has a long history in New Zealand, but the available sources do not establish where its products sold here are made today. For smaller-scale craft chocolate, Wellington Chocolate Factory is a current Aotearoa-made option.

Which chocolate is made in New Zealand?
Whittaker’s: a clear current manufacturing claim
Whittaker’s says, “All of our products are made at our factory in Porirua, New Zealand.” The company also describes itself as family-owned and operated since 1896. These are the company’s statements, rather than an independent audit, but they provide a direct answer for shoppers who want a mainstream brand with a stated New Zealand manufacturing base. The company says its products are sold through supermarkets, service stations, dairies and online in New Zealand. Whittaker’s FAQ
Cadbury: a New Zealand history, but current production is unclear
Cadbury’s New Zealand story includes a move toward local manufacture: Te Ara says the company originally supplied the country from its English factory and sought a local manufacturer in 1928 after import duties increased. That history does not establish the manufacturing location of current Cadbury products sold in New Zealand. Check the product packaging for the country of manufacture of a particular item.

Whittaker’s for familiar blocks and variety
Whittaker’s current catalog includes familiar options such as Creamy Milk, as well as 50% Dark, 72% Dark Ghana, specialty blocks featuring New Zealand or regional ingredients, bars, gift formats and baking pips. The catalog is useful for seeing the brand’s range, but a retailer’s live listing is the better check for local stock and pack details.
Wellington Chocolate Factory for craft chocolate
Wellington Chocolate Factory’s current shop offers chocolate for sale, and the company describes its Everyday Range as craft Pacific chocolate made in Aotearoa. It is a practical starting point if you want to explore a craft maker or choose a gift rather than shop only within the mainstream supermarket range. Confirm current products and stock directly with the shop.

How to choose between mainstream and craft chocolate
- Choose Whittaker’s if you want a widely available mainstream brand whose company states that all its products are made in Porirua, with familiar blocks and a varied catalog.
- Choose Wellington Chocolate Factory if the craft category and its Aotearoa-made Everyday Range are what you are looking for; check the live shop for what is available.
- Consider Cadbury if you already enjoy the brand, but do not use its historical New Zealand manufacturing story to infer where a current product was made.
- Explore other local makers by checking their current product and stock information rather than relying on an industry list published in 2018.
Prices and stock can vary by retailer, location, pack size and promotion. To compare value, check the same retailer at the same time and compare equivalent pack sizes. No current, like-for-like prices or independent taste-test results are established here, so this comparison does not rank the brands by value or flavour.
