Xbox now uses Essential and Premium as the plan names on its U.S. comparison page, so this guide uses those current names and notes the older names for clarity. Prices below are U.S. references; check Xbox’s local plan page and your account’s renewal amount before subscribing.
Core, Standard, Essential, and Premium: what changed?
Xbox’s current U.S. plan comparison lists Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Essential corresponds to the tier previously called Core, and Premium corresponds to the tier previously called Standard. The current comparison establishes the names in use now; it does not document every subscriber’s account-specific migration history. See Xbox’s plan comparison for the current lineup.
Game Pass plan comparison
| Plan | Catalog and access | U.S. price reference | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential (formerly Core) | 50+ games, according to Xbox’s December 2025 cloud-gaming guide; includes cloud gaming and online console multiplayer in the paid plan. | As low as $10/month, as stated by Xbox in 2025; this is a starting price, not a guaranteed regular rate. | Players who mainly want paid-plan console multiplayer and a smaller included game selection. |
| Premium (formerly Standard) | 200+ games across console, PC, and supported devices, according to Xbox’s December 2025 guide; includes Essential benefits and cloud gaming. | $14.99/month, as stated by Xbox in 2025. | Players who want a larger multi-device catalog but do not need Ultimate’s eligible day-one releases or bundled benefits. |
| Ultimate | 500+ games on Xbox’s current comparison page, accessed October 4, 2026; includes eligible day-one releases and cloud gaming. | $22.99/month in the U.S. starting April 21, 2026, according to Xbox; prices may vary by region. | Players who will use its broader library and benefits, including eligible launch releases and cloud play. |
Game counts and prices come from Xbox sources and are not promises that a particular title will remain available or that every customer will see the same local rate. Xbox says titles, numbers, features, and availability vary over time and by region, plan, and platform. Check the live comparison and catalog for the games and features that matter to you.
Which plan should you choose?
Choose Essential if multiplayer is the main reason you subscribe
Essential is the entry-level fit when you want paid-plan online console multiplayer and are satisfied with a smaller included catalog. One important exception: free-to-play games are available for online multiplayer to all Xbox players, so you do not need a paid tier solely to play those games online.

Choose Premium for a larger library across supported devices
Premium is the middle option if you want more games and expect to play across console, Windows PC, or supported devices. It includes the Essential benefits and cloud gaming, but it is not the tier to choose specifically for Ultimate’s eligible day-one releases.
Choose Ultimate when its extras earn their cost
Ultimate makes sense if you regularly play from its larger catalog, value cloud gaming, or want eligible day-one releases and other included benefits. Do not treat “day one” as a guarantee for every publisher or franchise. In an April 21, 2026 update, Xbox said future Call of Duty titles would no longer join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; instead, they would arrive during the following holiday season, about a year later. Read Xbox’s price and lineup update for that change.

Is Premium worth it over Essential?
Compare the extra monthly cost with how often you will use Premium’s larger catalog and supported-device access. Xbox’s December 2025 guide lists 50+ games for Essential and 200+ for Premium, but a larger number alone does not establish better value for you. Look up the specific games you want, confirm they are currently included on your platform, and consider whether you will actually play them during the subscription period.
The U.S. prices cited by Xbox are not all described in the same way: Essential is “as low as” $10/month, Premium is $14.99/month, and Ultimate is $22.99/month from April 21, 2026. Rates can vary by region, and promotions or account-specific renewal amounts may differ. Review the recurring charge shown at checkout before you subscribe or renew.

Do you need Ultimate for cloud gaming?
No. Xbox’s December 2025 cloud-gaming guide lists cloud gaming with Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. The right choice depends on the catalog and benefits you want, as well as whether your device, region, and chosen game support cloud play. Xbox describes a variety of controllers and other input methods, but does not establish one controller as required or compatible with every device.
Cloud access is not the same as access to every game: a title not included with Game Pass may need to be purchased separately. Check Xbox’s cloud gaming guide and live catalog for supported devices, games, and current availability.
