To improve Fortnite FPS on a Windows 11 PC, first compare your CPU, GPU, memory, and storage with Epic’s current PC requirements. Then verify the game files, test the rendering mode and quality settings, and try Epic’s Windows graphics and power settings one at a time. These steps can help, but there is no universal best preset or guaranteed FPS increase: results depend on the PC, game version, and settings.

How do I improve FPS in Fortnite on PC?

Use a baseline-and-test approach so you can tell which changes actually help on your machine. Before adjusting settings, note your CPU, GPU, installed memory, display resolution, Fortnite rendering mode, and FPS in a repeatable part of the game. This is a way to compare your own results, not a benchmark or a promise of a particular gain.

  1. Check the hardware. Compare your PC with Epic’s current Fortnite PC system requirements, which list minimum, recommended, and Epic quality tiers and specify 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Epic cautions that meeting only minimum requirements probably will not support the highest settings.
  2. Verify Fortnite’s files. In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, use Fortnite’s management options, and select Verify. Epic says verification may take a few minutes depending on installation size. It checks the installation; it is not an FPS boost in every case.
  3. Try a lower-load rendering mode if appropriate. Epic recommends Performance mode when using low scalability settings or less powerful hardware. Change Rendering Mode in Fortnite’s Display options, apply the change, then restart the game.
  4. Adjust quality gradually. Start with low quality settings and raise them incrementally until the image and performance are acceptable. Compare the same scene and conditions rather than judging from a different match or location.
  5. Test Windows settings. Follow the steps below, changing one setting at a time and restarting if Windows requests it. Then repeat your FPS observation.

Epic warns that if a PC does not meet the requirements, its troubleshooting steps may not improve the experience. Elsewhere, Epic qualifies that some steps may help slightly or not at all, depending on the hardware.

Why is Fortnite running with low FPS, frame drops, or stuttering?

Low average FPS and stuttering are not necessarily the same problem. FPS can be limited by hardware capability or demanding visual settings, while inconsistent frame delivery can have several possible causes. Epic’s guidance emphasizes hardware, game settings, graphics drivers, and installation checks; it does not identify a single cause for every PC.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
  • Hardware below the target tier: Epic says performance depends on the PC and recommends checking its current requirements before troubleshooting.
  • Rendering mode or quality settings: These affect visual fidelity and system load. A lower-load option may help some systems, with a corresponding image-quality trade-off.
  • Graphics-driver or compatibility trouble: Epic recommends updating graphics drivers for graphics issues. Crashes, freezing, or black screens in DirectX 12 are a separate compatibility symptom, not simply low FPS.
  • Installation problems: Verifying files is a reasonable check if you suspect damaged or missing game data, though it may not change performance.
  • Other PC limits: CPU limits, memory, thermal conditions, game updates, and settings may also affect results. The support guidance does not diagnose an individual machine’s bottleneck.

What are the best Fortnite settings for more FPS on Windows 11?

There is no universal best settings profile. Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance recommends starting at low quality settings and gradually raising them to find an acceptable balance; it does not publish controlled FPS gains for particular configurations. Choose settings by comparing frame consistency, image quality and readability, and stability with your current game version and driver.

Rendering mode

For low-end hardware or low scalability settings, Epic recommends Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity. The exact label and available options can change with Fortnite updates, so use the choices currently shown under Display settings. Apply the change and restart Fortnite as directed.

Performance Mode trades visual quality for lower memory use and reduced CPU/GPU load, according to Epic’s Performance Mode description. Epic’s Fortnite 37.00 notes describe a DirectX 12 Performance Mode replacing the earlier DirectX 11 Performance Mode; they say the newer implementation uses APIs that work better with modern PC hardware and benefits from up-to-date driver support. That is release-note context, not confirmation that every installation currently exposes the same menu options. Check the live game menu rather than relying on older instructions.

Quality settings and resolution

Lowering quality settings is a sensible test when FPS is low, but the best balance depends on what matters to you and how your PC performs. Change one option at a time and compare in the same scene. Resolution, frame caps, view distance, shadows, and latency-related features are choices to test on your own system; the cited support guidance does not establish a universal configuration or performance result for them.

Which Windows 11 settings should I try?

Epic’s low-FPS guidance for Windows lists the following troubleshooting options. Windows labels and availability can vary by device and build, so use the closest available label and skip settings your PC does not expose.

  1. Assign Fortnite to the high-performance GPU: Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Add or select FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe and set its graphics preference to High performance. This is especially relevant if the PC has both integrated and discrete graphics.
  2. Check Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling: In the Graphics settings area, turn it on if the option is available.
  3. Choose a performance-oriented power setting: Select a High performance or Best performance plan or mode where Windows offers one.
  4. Turn on Game Mode: Find Game Mode in Windows Settings and enable it.
  5. Turn off Xbox Game Bar: Epic lists disabling Xbox Game Bar as a troubleshooting step.
  6. Review Delivery Optimization: Epic recommends turning off downloads from other PCs in Windows Delivery Optimization.

These are support recommendations, not controlled benchmark results, and they will not necessarily raise FPS. Change one option at a time, restart when prompted, and compare under similar gameplay conditions.

What should I do if Fortnite has graphics problems or DirectX 12 crashes?

For graphics faults, use Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance and update your graphics driver using the GPU maker’s official driver source. If the PC has integrated and discrete graphics, confirm Fortnite is assigned to the high-performance graphics card in Windows.

If DirectX 12 causes crashes, freezing, or black screens, Epic says switching to Performance Mode may help. Treat that as a workaround for those symptoms, not a general FPS tweak. Intel also has a vendor-authored guide to improving FPS in Fortnite; its recommendations are not controlled tests of performance on every PC.

Can Performance Mode reduce Fortnite’s install size?

Epic Games Player Support says players using Performance Mode can remove high-resolution textures, saving over 14 GB and bringing the installation to 17 GB. Those figures come from an undated Epic support page and may change as Fortnite is updated, so treat them as the figures reported there, not a guarantee of the current install size.

When should I upgrade PC hardware?

Consider an upgrade only after checking your requirements tier and identifying a likely limit. Epic’s requirements list discrete graphics cards for its recommended and Epic quality tiers, making a GPU upgrade a possible path when graphics hardware is below the level needed for your target settings. That does not establish that the GPU is the bottleneck in every low-FPS or stuttering case.

  • Check whether the PC meets the current requirements for the experience you want.
  • Compare rendering modes and settings on the same PC before spending money.
  • Consider the target resolution and quality, the measured bottleneck, and compatibility with the rest of the system.
  • Do not assume a new graphics card alone will resolve stutter; CPU limits, memory, thermals, drivers, and game changes can matter too.
