Choose DOOM Eternal for fast, highly mobile combat and constant weapon-and-resource decisions. Choose DOOM: The Dark Ages for a heavier, more grounded rhythm built around blocking, parrying and shield attacks, with larger spaces to explore. The right next game depends on which combat style you want—not on a universal ranking.

At a glance: Eternal or The Dark Ages?

What actually separates the games

Eternal makes movement and resource juggling the point

DOOM Eternal pushes you to stay mobile and switch tools as fights unfold. Its resource loop connects different actions to survival: chainsaw kills refill ammunition, Flame Belch helps you regain armor, and Glory Kills restore health. That means combat is not just about aiming; choosing when to use each tool is part of maintaining pressure.

The Dark Ages puts the shield at the center

DOOM: The Dark Ages shifts the emphasis toward standing your ground, reading attacks and responding with the Shield Saw. Its blocking, parrying, deflection, bashing and throwing options support a more deliberate, close-pressure style. Melee weapons and firearms work alongside the shield, while larger play spaces, secrets and upgrades give exploration a more prominent role. Official features also include Atlan mech encounters and dragon combat.

That contrast is broadly reflected in reviews, though it is not a controlled head-to-head test. The Guardian contrasts Eternal’s speed and evasion with The Dark Ages’ emphasis on standing your ground. GameSpot also describes The Dark Ages as noticeably slower, while judging its pace in relation to its new combat tools. Le Monde praises its central combat and Shield Saw but is less impressed by some mech and dragon sequences. Those are reviewers’ assessments, not universal measures of quality.

Should I play Doom Eternal or Dark Ages?

Pick based on the experience you want next:

  • Choose DOOM Eternal if you want speed, frequent movement and evasion, and a combat loop that rewards juggling weapons and recovery tools.
  • Choose DOOM: The Dark Ages if you want shield-led combat, a heavier pace, broader spaces to explore or the option to adjust game speed and parry settings.
  • Consider Revelations if you already want The Dark Ages and are looking for more campaign and endgame content. Check that the expansion is available for your platform and confirm what your edition includes before buying.

Release order and story order point in opposite directions

If “next” means the order the games came out, play DOOM Eternal first: it released in 2020, before DOOM: The Dark Ages in 2025. If you mean story chronology, go the other way: Bethesda describes The Dark Ages as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. Bethesda also presents it as a jumping-on point for newcomers, so starting there is a reasonable option if chronology matters more to you than release order.

The choice is therefore about preference, not a required sequence. Eternal offers the earlier release and its fast combat design; The Dark Ages offers the prequel setting and its distinct shield-focused style. Neither choice requires a claim that one is objectively better for every player.

What Revelations adds to the choice

As of October 4, 2026, The Dark Ages’ first major expansion, Revelations, is available. In a July 1, 2026 preview, Xbox Wire described 10–12 hours of content across a story campaign, arenas and new Ripatorium content. That is the outlet’s estimate, not a guaranteed completion time.

The expansion adds the Chain Spear and new movement options while retaining the base game’s timing-focused combat. Game director and id Software studio co-director Hugo Martin described its direction this way: “We’re going to make the tanky Dark Ages Slayer fly.” If you want The Dark Ages’ heavier combat but also want added movement and more content, Revelations is relevant to the decision; it does not turn the two games into the same combat experience.

Where a newcomer can start

Bethesda calls The Dark Ages a jumping-on point, and its prequel position gives it a straightforward chronological case for newcomers. Starting with DOOM Eternal instead puts you in the earlier release and the faster combat style first. For a newcomer who has no strong preference about chronology, combat rhythm is the more useful tie-breaker.

Bethesda’s January 23, 2025 PlayStation.Blog interview quotes Hugo Martin: “There are three pillars of engagement in Dark Ages; combat, exploration and story – three reasons to play, narrative is just one of them.” That framing helps explain why The Dark Ages may appeal even if story order is not your main concern: its larger spaces and exploration are part of the package.
