How to Compare Premier League Title Predictions with the Table and Run-In

A table records points already won; a title model estimates what could happen. Compare dates, outputs and the actual run-in before judging a forecast.

The Premier League table shows points clubs have already earned; a title prediction estimates what may happen next. To compare them fairly, use dated snapshots, keep model outputs separate from current standings, and check the actual unplayed fixtures rather than relying on a games-remaining count alone.

Who will win the Premier League?

No forecast can establish the champion before the season is finished. A title probability means that a club won a stated share of a model’s simulated seasons; it is not a league-table position or a guarantee. Any answer needs a date, because standings change after matches and prediction models may refresh on a different schedule.

For example, TACTIX’s snapshot generated on 30 September 2026 covered 50 of the 380 fixtures in the 2026/27 season. It listed Manchester City with 15 current points, 83.8 projected points and a 59.8% title probability; Arsenal had 12 current points, 81.0 projected points and a 37.9% title probability. Those are TACTIX figures for that dated snapshot—not official standings as of 4 October and not a live forecast. TACTIX’s Premier League predictions

Club Current points in TACTIX snapshot Projected final points Title probability
Manchester City 15 83.8 59.8%
Arsenal 12 81.0 37.9%

The two points columns answer different questions: one records points earned by the snapshot date; the other is the model’s estimated final total. The title probability is a third kind of output. Do not read any of these projected values as the club’s present place in the table.

How to compare a prediction with the league table

  1. Write down the snapshot date. Record when you checked the table and when the forecast was published or generated. Label any mismatch instead of presenting the figures as simultaneous.
  2. Read the table as results to date. Compare position alongside matches played, wins, draws, losses, goals for, goals against, goal difference, points and form. Position alone can mislead when clubs have played different numbers of matches. The Premier League table identifies these fields, but a live table is needed for populated current values. 3. Identify exactly what the forecast measures. A title chance, projected points total and distribution of likely finishing positions are not interchangeable. Keep each measure in its own column or sentence.
  4. Check the match cutoff. Confirm how many matches the model includes. Do not attach an old probability to a newer table without clearly stating that the data dates differ.
  5. Then examine the run-in. Review the actual unplayed opponents, home-and-away order and dates. A team with fewer points now may still project well if its model expects a stronger finish, but schedule difficulty is an estimate, not a result.

How have the title predictions changed?

First check that the forecasts are comparable: their dates and match cutoffs, output definitions, methods, treatment of remaining fixtures and handling of uncertainty. A change between two percentages can reflect new results, a model update, or different methods; it does not by itself show that one club’s prospects changed by that exact amount.

Two dated examples illustrate why the source and cutoff matter. Opta Analyst’s 21 September 2026 report, after five matchdays, listed Arsenal second, three points behind Manchester City, and gave Arsenal a 43.7% title probability and City a 39.8% probability. TACTIX’s 30 September snapshot instead reported City at 59.8% and Arsenal at 37.9%. These are outputs from different dates and models, not a shared forecast or consensus. Do not combine or average them as if they were directly comparable. Opta Analyst’s 21 September report

What the models say they do

  • Opta Analyst: Its league model estimates the likelihood of finishing positions from match-outcome probabilities and simulates the remaining fixtures thousands of times. The pre-season version ran 10,000 simulations; the 21 September article describes a changing forecast after a small early-season sample, not a current 4 October run.
  • TACTIX: It says it models scorelines for remaining fixtures with a Dixon-Coles approach, using team strengths fitted on the trailing 12 months, and runs 10,000 simulations. Its stated tie-break treatment belongs to that model and should not be assumed to match another source’s.

Different inputs, methods, assumptions and update times can produce different forecasts. Compare like with like first, then describe any remaining disagreement as a difference between model outputs—not proof that one percentage is the answer.

How to check the remaining fixtures

Use the official fixture list to verify who each contender still faces, the home-and-away sequence and the scheduled dates. The Premier League released the 2026/27 list on 19 June 2026 and states, “All fixtures are subject to change.” A release-day schedule is not necessarily a current list of remaining fixtures, so check the live schedule before relying on a date or grouping. The season has 380 fixtures in total. TACTIX’s 30 September snapshot counted 50 played and 330 remaining. Those are season-level counts from that snapshot, not the current remaining count on 4 October. For an individual club, use its matches played and verify each unplayed match rather than assuming the league-wide count describes its run-in.

How to interpret a title probability

A probability describes a range of simulated outcomes. In TACTIX’s cited snapshot, outcomes other than its favorite won in 4,024 of 10,000 simulations. That is a useful reminder that “most likely” is not “certain”: even a model’s leading contender did not win in many of its simulated seasons.

For a grounded comparison, report each forecast with its source and date, name what the number measures, and keep it beside—not in place of—the actual table. A genuinely current comparison requires a fresh check of standings, each club’s matches played, the revised fixture list and the forecast’s own update time.
