Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality competition inspired by the scripted Squid Game, not a recreation of its lethal stakes. Netflix describes the format as 456 contestants playing for one $4.56 million prize. Its games and elimination rules change by season, so the detailed guide below focuses on Season 2.
How does Squid Game: The Challenge work?
Contestants face games that test timing, coordination, dexterity, strategy and social judgment. Players are eliminated as they lose or fail a game’s requirements; the competition continues until one winner remains. Netflix lists 456 contestants and a $4.56 million prize for the overall format, while its Season 2 guide describes eight games. Those figures are Netflix’s descriptions, not independent counts.
The reality competition does not reproduce the scripted series’ deadly consequences. Netflix says safety and mental health were production considerations. Executive producer Tim Harcourt said, “People’s safety in the show is of paramount importance to us. Everything is considered — both physical safety and mental health.”
What are the Season 2 games and rules?
Season 2 combines new and returning games, shifting between individual judgment, team coordination and social maneuvering. The order below follows the season’s format, which saves Red Light, Green Light for the final four.

The winning team advances and the losing team is eliminated. Netflix says this reality version has no time limit, unlike the version described in the scripted series. Executive producer Stephen Yemoh said the change was intended to “bring in that sense of competition quite early.”
3. Catch
Players divide into four color groups and line up on marked dots. A thrower aims for the player at the front of a line. If the player catches the ball, they become the next thrower. If the ball is dropped, both the thrower and catcher are eliminated. Position therefore matters as much as catching skill. Netflix’s guide says only 16 balls are in play, so some contestants may not take a turn. Executive producer Nicola Brown described the game’s premise as “can you catch the ball, can you throw a ball?”

4. Mingle
Players ride a rotating carousel surrounded by doors. When it stops, a number is called, and contestants must quickly form groups of exactly that size and enter a room together. A group with the wrong number of people, or anyone left outside, is eliminated. Executive games producer Anna Kidd said the filming setup included “90 cameras ready to film whatever happened, whenever it happened, at all times.”
5. Marbles
Players pair up, receive bags of marbles and have 30 minutes to choose a game to play. The rules and winner depend on the game each pair selects. The loser gives up their marbles and is eliminated.

6. Slides and Ladders
Pairs move toward a final square on a large board-game-like set using slides and ladders. At a slide, they choose between two options: a wrong choice eliminates them, while the other sends them lower on the board. Landing on a question mark means drawing a card and following its instruction. Netflix reported that the 35-foot set went through more than 200 testing rounds.
The apparent drop from the set is an illusion: a player quoted by Netflix Tudum said the slide curves sharply off the back.
Best Value
- Gonggi Stone catching game (Korean Knucklebones) :Start the game by throwing five gong-gis onto the floor. Pick one gong-gi and throw it into the air. While this gong-gi is in the air, grab one that’s on the floor before catching the one in the air. Repeat this to clear the floor.
- Jebi Kicks (Korean Hacky Sack) : Continuously kick ‘Jebi’ in the air without dropping. Whoever manages the most number of kicks wins.
- Paeng-y (Spinning Tops) : Prepare by winding a rope around the bottom of the top. Then in one swift movement, yank on the free end of the rope to make the top spin.
- Biseokchigi : Knock down the opponents’ Biseok(rocks) in 18 steps. Each step consists of stably resting the biseok on a body part and moving to opponent’s biseok to knock them down.
- DDAKJI : It's involves two playing tiles of different colors. The point of the game is to flip over the other player's tile, by hitting it with your tile from above. As easy as the rules are, it's actually quite a challenging game that takes a lot more skill than you would think - but no worries, I'll give you a tip later to maximize our chances of winning this pastime.
7. Circle of Trust
Players sit blindfolded at desks arranged in a circle. A selected player places a gift box on someone else’s desk. The recipient guesses who left it. If the guess is right, the giver is eliminated; if it is wrong, the recipient is eliminated.
8. Red Light, Green Light
Season 2 uses this familiar game in the final round, with four players rather than all 456 contestants. Netflix says the finalists wore body-motion tracking sensors, and production reviewed video frame by frame to adjudicate movement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does Season 2 differ from the scripted show?
The reality version adapts games for a competition in which losing means elimination, not death. Its rules can also diverge from the scripted series: Netflix specifically notes that the Season 2 Six-Legged Pentathlon has no time limit. It also places Red Light, Green Light at the end of the season, with four finalists. Because games and placements vary by season, there is no single lineup that applies to every season of The Challenge.
When and where did Season 2 take place?
Netflix Tudum reported that Season 2 was filmed in the United Kingdom and released as a three-week event beginning November 4, 2025, with new episodes on Tuesdays and a finale on November 18. The season had 10 episodes and one winner from 456 entrants. These are historical Season 2 details, not a schedule or contestant count for later seasons.
On November 19, 2025, Netflix Tudum reported that Season 3 had been renewed and recruitment was underway, with applicants required to be at least 21 at that time. Casting requirements and availability can change; check Netflix’s current casting information before applying.
