Supercross and motocross: what is the difference?
Supercross (often abbreviated SX) uses a purpose-built course inside a stadium. Its tight, technical obstacles reward precision and consistency. Pro Motocross, often called MX, is an outdoor series on natural terrain, where speed and endurance are central to the racing. Supercross’s governing FAQ describes a typical season as 17 rounds, usually running from January through early May, with points contributing to the SMX World Championship; check the current schedule for the season you plan to attend.
In Supercross, the 450 class is the premier class, while the 250 class features emerging riders. The AMA traces professional motocross on a temporary course to Daytona International Speedway in 1971; the stadium format followed in 1972, beginning at the Los Angeles Coliseum. What happens on event day?
The advertised evening show is not necessarily the first activity. Supercross practice and qualifying begin in the afternoon, and FanFest overlaps with qualifying in many markets. The exact running order and local times are on the selected event’s detail page, so use that page rather than assuming every round follows the same schedule.

Qualifying and main events
Qualifying heats help determine who advances to the main events. The series FAQ describes each 450- and 250-class main as featuring 22 riders. It lists a 450 main as 20 minutes plus one lap and a 250 main as 15 minutes plus one lap. These are the stated race formats, not a guarantee of the total time you will spend at the venue: introductions, delays, and other parts of the program add time.
Triple Crown rounds
Some Supercross events use a Triple Crown format with three main events; the overall winner is determined by best average finish. It is an event-specific format, not the default to expect at every round. Check the event listing to see whether your race is a Triple Crown.

Is FanFest included with the race ticket?
Do not assume it is. FanFest is a separate pre-race experience in many markets, with activities that can include rider and team access, qualifying, photo opportunities, sponsor activities, merchandise, and family activities. Food and vendor areas are available only in select markets. Availability and entry procedures vary; the organizer’s FAQ notes that FanFest is not offered in Detroit, and that an empty-can admission offer has an Indianapolis exception.
The FAQ says guests age two and older need both a main-event ticket and FanFest access to attend both portions. Confirm FanFest availability, its hours, and what admission each person needs on the selected event page. Rider access or a particular activity should not be treated as guaranteed.

What should you check before buying tickets or bringing children?
The Supercross FAQ says children age two and older need event tickets, but local public-event rules may require a ticket at any age. Check the stadium’s policy for the specific event before buying or arriving with a child.
Ticket exchanges, cancellations, and refunds are generally unavailable under the series FAQ, with different treatment possible if an event is postponed, rescheduled, or cancelled. Read the current terms from the ticket seller for the event you are buying; do not rely on a general rule to determine what applies to your order.

First-race preparation checklist
- Open the official event detail page. Confirm the date, local schedule, doors, FanFest hours, and event-specific notes. The current event listing is the place to check details for your round: Supercross event details.
- Read the venue’s entry rules. Check the stadium’s current guidance for bags, cameras, outside food and drink, and other restricted or permitted items. Supercross defers to local venue rules, so there is no universal bag policy to rely on.
- Dress for walking and stairs. Comfortable clothing and practical shoes are sensible for moving around the venue and using its steps.
- Plan your trip using the venue’s information. Look up current transport and parking arrangements for your stadium; they are not the same at every event.
- Consider hearing protection. It can be a comfort measure, particularly for children, but the official event pages do not establish a spectator sound-level figure or a universal ear-protection requirement.
- If you want FanFest, verify the add-on details. Check that it is offered at your round and whether every person in your party needs separate access.
