The course setting and design are the clearest differences. In AMA outdoor motocross, riders typically race two motos in each class, with the combined results determining the overall placing.
How do the tracks differ?
Supercross: a stadium-built course
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) describes Supercross as stadium racing on a specially constructed track. Its 2026 AMA Supercross Championship Rulebook puts it this way: “Supercross is conducted within a stadium-type facility on a specially constructed racetrack.” Read the 2026 AMA Supercross Championship Rulebook.
The temporary course is designed for racing within the stadium setting, rather than following a natural outdoor landscape. Supercross is therefore identified by both its venue and its purpose-built track.
Motocross: outdoor terrain
Motocross courses use man-made or modified terrain. The AMA says: “Motocross races are run over man-made or man-modified terrain courses featuring steep hills, jumps and tight turns, and typically feature two races — called motos — in each class.” See the AMA Motocross overview.

How does the race format differ?
For AMA outdoor motocross, the typical format is two motos per class, with the combined score determining the overall placing. An individual moto result is not, by itself, the event’s overall result.

Supercross procedures can include qualifying and different race stages, but details depend on the applicable season rules and event. AMA publishes current rulebooks and event bulletins; check them before relying on specifics such as heat or main formats, race lengths, or scoring for a particular round. Check AMA Supercross rules and bulletins. AMA’s beginner guidance also notes that indoor events may use qualifiers and mains, unlike the usual two-moto outdoor motocross format. Read AMA’s guide to getting started in motocross.
Are Supercross and motocross the same championship?
No. They are related forms of off-road motorcycle racing, but the AMA describes separate Supercross and motocross disciplines. The AMA Supercross Championship page lists 450SX and 250SX classes; the 250SX category is divided into Eastern and Western regional divisions, each with its own title.
