What Makes a Hockey Goalie’s Save Percentage and Goals-Against Average Useful?

Save percentage measures the share of shots on goal stopped; goals-against average measures goals allowed per 60 minutes. Here’s how to use both stats in context.

Save percentage and goals-against average are useful because they summarize two different parts of a goalie’s performance: the share of shots on goal stopped and the rate of goals allowed per 60 minutes. Read together, they offer a quick view of results; neither, on its own, tells you how difficult the shots were or how much help the goalie received from the defense.

What does each statistic measure?

The NHL defines a shot on goal as a shot, tip, or deflection that enters the net, or would have entered if the goalie had not stopped it. A missed shot or an unstopped puck that hits the post does not count as a shot on goal under that definition. NHL glossary

Save percentage: share of shots stopped

Save percentage (SV%) is saves divided by shots faced. It answers: what proportion of the shots on goal did the goalie stop? A higher percentage means the goalie stopped a larger share of those shots. Because its denominator is shots on goal, it does not include every opposing attempt.

Goals-against average: goals per 60 minutes

Goals-against average (GAA) is goals allowed multiplied by 60, divided by minutes played. It expresses goals allowed as a rate per 60 minutes, not as the goalie’s total goals conceded. A lower GAA means goals were allowed less frequently relative to playing time. NHL glossary

Why are both stats useful?

Their different denominators make them complementary. SV% describes outcomes relative to shots on goal; GAA describes goals allowed relative to time in the game. Together, they give a compact view of how often a goalie stopped shots and how frequently the team conceded while that goalie played. They are convenient summaries, but not complete explanations of performance.

What can these numbers leave out?

Shot difficulty

SV% treats each shot on goal alike in its basic calculation. It does not distinguish a routine shot from a close-range attempt, a deflection, or a shot after a pass across the crease. Seattle Kraken goalie Philipp Grubauer put the problem plainly: “How do you separate if somebody shoots from the blue line versus when there’s a guy in front of me who tips it?” The Kraken analysis quoting Grubauer

Defense and game context

GAA records goals allowed relative to minutes, but the goalie does not control every chance the opposing team creates. Defensive coverage, shot quality, and other game circumstances can affect how many goals get through. A low GAA is favorable as a result, but it does not isolate the goalie’s contribution from the team’s.

Advanced measures can add information about shot quality, but they cannot fully capture a goalie’s read of a play or whether defenders fulfilled their responsibilities. NHL analysis of goalie evaluation

How should you compare two goalies?

  1. Match the scope. Check that the figures cover comparable competitions and time spans. Note games played, starts or relief appearances, minutes, and shots faced; rates based on a short run may be less representative.
  2. Look beyond the headline rates. Consider workload and the kinds of chances faced, including shot type, distance, angle, rush origin, and pre-shot passing when those data are available.
  3. Use advanced metrics as context, not a final verdict. Goals saved above average compares observed saves with a league-average expectation for the shots faced. Expected save percentage approaches account for shot characteristics. Their inputs and assumptions can differ, so check how a metric is defined and who provides it before comparing values across models. Seattle Kraken analysis
  4. Keep the limits in view. Models that account for shot characteristics still cannot fully represent the goalie’s reads or the defenders’ responsibilities. NHL analysis

Is there a universal “good” SV% or GAA?

There is no timeless cutoff established here for either statistic. League averages and scoring environments can change over seasons, so a number is more informative when compared with goalies in the same competition and period, with workload and shot context considered.
