What is Steam Next Fest?
Steam Next Fest is a weeklong event focused on upcoming games with playable demos. Steam says its aim is to connect players with games they may like while helping developers reach potential fans and gather feedback. Players can try the demos for free, making the event a way to sample a game before deciding whether to follow or buy it.
The schedule changes with each edition. Valve lists the October 2026 event as running from October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC−7) to October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC−7). Check the Steam Next Fest page for the edition currently underway or announced.
How do I find Soulslike demos on Steam?
- Open the live Next Fest event page. Confirm the edition dates first; the event page and its available games change over time.
- Start with categories and tags. Browse the categories or a game’s primary tags to narrow the list. Steam recommends searching subgenres and specific features as well as broad genres.
- Try related search terms. If “Soulslike” does not surface enough results, search for subgenres or mechanics that matter to you, such as action RPG, challenging combat, or exploration. Results depend on how games are categorized and tagged, so no single term is a complete filter.
- Open each promising listing. Review its description, trailer, screenshots, tags, and store-page demo control. Do not assume a game has a playable demo just because it appears to fit your search.
Steam organizes event discovery with selected categories and Steam Tags. A game must have a released demo to be eligible for the event, but checking the individual listing is still the practical way to confirm that you can install and play it.

How do I confirm a demo is playable?
On the game’s Steam store page, look for its demo or install control and use that listing to begin the download. If there is no demo control, the store page does not currently offer a demo through that listing. Event eligibility depends on a released demo, but availability can change, so confirm before setting aside time to play.
Next Fest demos are free to try. A demo is only a sample, though: it may not include every system or enough content to judge the full game, and a short session cannot establish how the final release will perform or feel throughout.

What should I evaluate in a Soulslike demo?
Use the same questions for each sample rather than judging by difficulty alone. These are player evaluation criteria, not ratings of any particular title.
- Combat feel and readability: Are attacks, enemy tells, dodges, and hit feedback clear enough for you to make deliberate decisions?
- Resource management: If the game uses stamina or another limited resource, does managing it add satisfying choices or feel frustrating?
- Difficulty and recovery: What happens after a mistake or defeat? Do checkpoints and the recovery loop suit the kind of challenge you want?
- Exploration and structure: Does the demo give you a useful sense of how areas connect, how you find routes, and what rewards exploration?
- Controls and performance on your setup: Can you play comfortably with your input device, and does the demo run acceptably on your PC?
- Coverage of the core loop: Does the sample contain enough combat, exploration, and progression to help you decide whether the full game merits a place on your wishlist?
What should I do after trying a demo?
Wishlist games you want to follow; a wishlist is not a purchase. If Next Fest has ended, visit the individual game’s store page to see whether its demo is still available. Valve encourages developers to consider leaving demos playable after the event, but continued access is not guaranteed.
