Then compare the remaining candidates against clear, consistently applied criteria and explain who made the decision. A major release being ineligible should narrow the field—not predetermine which eligible game wins.
Start with the award’s rules for that edition
There is no universal Game of the Year eligibility rule. Rules can differ by organization, category and year, so name the award and edition before assessing any candidate. Check the award’s official rules or announcement, including the release window, geographic scope, category-specific exclusions and any provisions for updated or older games.
For example, BAFTA’s 2027 Games Awards rules define an eligible release as one that has been or will be released in the UK between 15 November 2025 and 19 November 2026. For Best Game, BAFTA excludes remakes, DLC and Evolving Game entries from the automatically considered pool; its rules also say remasters are generally ineligible, remakes are ineligible in Best Game and British Game, and DLC is not a new game for Best Game. These are rules for BAFTA’s 2027 edition, not a template for other awards.
The Game Awards’ 2025 FAQ gave that edition’s cutoff as Friday, November 21, 2025, at 9 p.m. PT. It also says games released in earlier years can qualify in all categories when the jury considers their new content, improvements or service updates meritorious. BAFTA’s 2027 information page, meanwhile, says games released before its eligibility window may be eligible in Evolving Game if they receive regular content updates and have a substantial future roadmap. The different provisions show why one award’s cutoff or exception should not be applied to another.

Verify what “ineligible” means
Confirm the exclusion in the official rules or announcement. A game may be formally ineligible, released after a cutoff, eligible but overlooked, or absent from a shortlist. Those are different situations, and only the first two necessarily involve eligibility. If the award or game has not been identified, there is not enough information to verify a specific exclusion or determine which candidates remain.
Define the eligible field before choosing
Once the rules are clear, establish the full candidate pool for the relevant category. Do not treat the absence of a high-profile release as evidence that a particular alternative should win. The excluded game changes who can be considered; it does not supply a verdict about the eligible games.

Keep the scope consistent: compare games eligible for the same award, edition and category. If a title qualifies only under a special category or exception, say so rather than quietly mixing it into a different field.
Choose criteria that make the judgment legible
Use the award’s official rubric if it provides one. BAFTA defines Best Game as “the best game of the year, across all genres,” and its voting rules say members are expected to play games in contention, apply their expertise and decide on “the single criteria of Excellence.” That is BAFTA’s stated principle; it does not prescribe the specific checklist below.

For an editorial comparison where no more detailed official rubric is available, assess each eligible game on the same dimensions:
- Craft and execution: How well do the systems, controls, presentation and overall experience work together?
- Originality: Does the game bring a distinctive idea, perspective or combination of ideas to its genre?
- Design and play experience: Are its mechanics, pacing, challenge and player choices coherent and rewarding?
- Narrative or emotional impact: Where relevant, how effectively does it create character, atmosphere, meaning or feeling?
- Technical quality: How well does it perform and present itself on the platforms being considered?
- Success on its own aims: Does it deliver what it sets out to do? This helps compare different genres without pretending they offer the same experience.
These are useful editorial criteria, not a claim that every award uses this rubric. Apply them consistently, while allowing a category’s official definition to take priority.

Explain who is choosing the winner
A critic’s pick, a jury result, a committee decision and a public vote represent different processes. State which one the article reflects and avoid presenting one model as universal.
- The Game Awards: Its voting-jury page says nominations are selected by a jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets across the globe. The page does not state a publication year; this figure describes its nominations jury, not a universal GOTY ballot size.
- Japan Game Awards: Its Game of the Year overview says the winner is selected after discussion by the Japan Game Awards Executive Committee.
- BAFTA: Its rules expect voting members to play contenders and apply their expertise. That describes BAFTA’s member-based process, not a public vote or a procedure shared by all awards.
Compare the finalists and show the reasoning
After eligibility and criteria are settled, compare the actual candidates rather than arguing only about the missing release. For each finalist, identify its strongest case under the chosen criteria and the tradeoffs that count against it. Then explain why the winner best satisfies the stated standard among the eligible games.

A useful decision record answers three questions: What was the eligible field? Which criteria mattered, and how were they applied? Why did the selected game prevail over the strongest alternatives? Addressing those points makes the result understandable even to readers who would have chosen differently.
