International cricket has three main formats: Tests, One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Tests can run for up to five days and give each team two innings; ODIs allow 50 overs per side; T20Is allow 20 overs per side and usually take around three hours. Knowing the format, the meaning of an over, and how results are described makes a scorecard much easier to follow.
How do the three international cricket formats differ?
The ICC’s format overview describes three international formats. Their innings and time limits shape how a match unfolds: Tests leave room for two innings per team, while each side bats once in an ODI or T20I, with a fixed overs limit.

| Format | Broad length | Innings per team | Overs per side | What the structure means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test | Up to five days | Two | No fixed limited-overs quota | Teams have more time and another innings to build or chase a total. |
| One-Day International (ODI) | One day | One | 50 | A side has a longer limited-overs innings than in T20 cricket, but must score within the quota. |
| Twenty20 International (T20I) | Usually around three hours | One | 20 | The smaller quota compresses the innings into a shorter spell of batting and bowling. |
These figures describe the ICC’s international formats, not every domestic or recreational competition, which may use different names or conditions. See the ICC overview of the three formats.
What is an over in cricket?
An over is a set of six valid deliveries bowled from one end. If a delivery is illegal and does not count toward the six-ball quota, the bowler must deliver another ball for the over to be completed. The ends alternate between overs.

So “10 overs” means 10 completed overs, not 10 individual balls. Under the ordinary six-valid-ball rule, that is 60 valid deliveries. Scoreboards often show overs in a form such as 10.3: this means 10 completed overs plus three valid balls in the next over, not 10.3 decimal overs.
How does a cricket match produce a result?
A team scores runs while batting and loses wickets when batters are dismissed. In a one-innings limited-overs match, one side generally sets a score and the other tries to pass it. In a Test, each team has two innings, so the result depends on the totals across those innings and the state of play before time runs out.
Rank #2
- Win: The match conditions identify one team as the winner.
- Tie: The teams finish level under the applicable result conditions. A tie is not the same as a draw in a Test.
- No-result: The match ends without a winner under the applicable rules, often because interruptions prevent enough play.
- Draw: In Test cricket, play can end without either a win or a tie; this is recorded as a draw.
Weather and interruptions can change how a result is decided. Minimum overs, revised targets, and tie-break procedures depend on the format and competition, so there is no single rain rule that applies to every match. The ICC maintains separate playing conditions by format and competition on its playing-conditions index.

The three formats provide a useful starting point, but operational details can vary between men’s and women’s competitions, tournaments, and series. The ICC announced revised international playing conditions effective for series starting on or after 1 October 2026; series already in progress continue under their previous regulations. Among the changes were provisions concerning pink balls in Tests, the end of a day during an incomplete final over, and the T20I interval. Consult the conditions applying to the specific match for such details: ICC announcement, 1 October 2026.

For a beginner, the reliable shorthand is format first, then innings and overs: Tests have two innings per team and can last up to five days; ODIs are 50 overs per side; T20Is are 20 overs per side. Match-result edge cases depend on the current competition rules.
