How to Track Training Load and Spot Signs of Overuse

A practical guide to logging training, effort, recovery, and symptoms—and interpreting changes without treating a wearable score as a diagnosis.

Track both the work you do and how your body responds to it. A simple, consistent log of activity, effort, recovery, and symptoms can help you notice troubling changes over time—but no single score, wearable, or workload formula can predict or diagnose an injury.

What training load means

Training load has two complementary parts: external load, or the work completed, and internal load, or your response to that work. The same session can feel very different to two people—or to the same person on different days. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) advises that load be monitored individually in its 2016 consensus statement on load in sport and injury risk.

  • External load: Session duration, distance, weight lifted, or games played—choose a measure relevant to your activity.
  • Internal load: Perceived effort, heart rate, or another relevant response to the session.
  • Tolerance and readiness: Fatigue, recovery, general well-being, motivation, stress, illness symptoms, pain, and limitations in normal function.
  • Context: Competitions, travel, sleep and recovery, recent training changes, and significant non-sport stress. Overall load can include demands outside training.

Set up a simple training log

Use a notebook, spreadsheet, or app you can update consistently. Record enough to see patterns without turning every session into a data project. An optional paper training diary can work just as well as a digital tracker.

  1. Record the date and session type. Note what you did, such as a workout, practice, or game.
  2. Record duration and one relevant external measure. Depending on the activity, that might be distance, lifting volume, or games played.
  3. Rate how demanding the session felt. Use the same perceived-effort scale each time so your own entries are comparable.
  4. Check in briefly on recovery and symptoms. Note fatigue, soreness or pain, general well-being, illness symptoms, and any change in function.
  5. Add context when it matters. Note unusual travel, poor recovery, a competition, or a meaningful stressor that could affect how you respond.

Keep the routine sustainable: a short, repeatable check-in is more useful for spotting your own trends than sporadic, highly detailed entries.

How to read the record

Compare your response with your own usual pattern, not with a universal target. Ask whether familiar work is starting to feel harder, whether recovery is taking longer, or whether pain, fatigue, or function is changing. Review both what you planned and what you actually completed and perceived.

One commonly used summary of internal load is session rating of perceived exertion multiplied by session duration. It can help summarize a session, but it is not a complete measure of training effect or injury risk: sessions with different duration and intensity profiles can produce the same product. Treat it as one piece of context, not a safety score.

Monitoring is a decision aid, not a forecast. There is no universal percentage increase, workload ratio, wearable score, or single marker that reliably separates safe training from unsafe training. The IOC’s guidance is to combine relevant measures and interpret them individually; its load-and-injury consensus and load-and-illness consensus do not establish one cutoff for every athlete or sport.

Signs of overuse to take seriously

Overuse problems can develop gradually through repeated loading, without one obvious injury incident. Track symptoms and function rather than waiting until pain forces you to stop.

  • Pain or soreness that is increasing or keeps returning during the same activity.
  • A familiar session that feels unusually difficult alongside worsening fatigue or recovery.
  • Difficulty performing normal movements or a noticeable loss of function.
  • Illness symptoms such as fatigue, muscle or joint aches, headache, or fever.

These observations are signals to review, not a remote diagnosis checklist. Illness symptoms can overlap with training-related fatigue, and the IOC’s 2016 consensus on load and illness notes that no single marker consistently predicts acute illness or overtraining syndrome. Definitive monitoring and diagnostic criteria for overreaching and overtraining syndrome also remain lacking; a dashboard cannot diagnose either.

What to do when the pattern changes

If symptoms appear or several measures worsen together, look at recent training, your response to it, recovery, and other demands as a whole. Depending on the pattern, review the plan, modify or reduce training, and allow adequate recovery. Do not rely on a single number to make the decision.

Seek assessment from a qualified sports-medicine professional for persistent or worsening pain, meaningful functional limitations, or concerning illness symptoms. A log can help you describe what changed and when, but it does not replace clinical assessment.

Choosing a tracking method

Pick the simplest method that captures the information relevant to you and that you will use consistently. Each option records only part of the picture unless paired with a symptom and recovery check-in.

Method What it can capture What it does not establish by itself
Paper diary, spreadsheet, or app Can combine session details, selected external measures, perceived effort, symptoms, and recovery notes. A log does not diagnose injury or predict it from a single entry.
Heart-rate monitoring A physiological response to exercise. Heart rate alone does not capture all external work, symptoms, or individual risk.
GPS or sport-specific device Selected external measures relevant to the activity. A device’s recorded measure is not, by itself, a validated injury prediction.

The practical monitoring cycle is to record external work, note the internal response, assess tolerance and well-being, then consider readiness for the next training stimulus. The 2017 athlete-monitoring practical guide describes this as a cycle rather than a one-time score.
