Check several features together—spelling, NHL logo, stitching, materials, alignment and price—but treat them as warning signs, not proof. A genuine jersey may have heat-pressed graphics if it is a retail Breakaway model; that alone does not make it counterfeit.
Check the seller and listing first
NHL Shop advises buyers to be wary of sellers who are not trusted dealers of officially licensed NHL merchandise. Buying through an official league, Fanatics or team-store channel can reduce risk, but still check the specific listing, seller and return terms. NHL-named sales channels for the 2024 Fanatics assortment included NHLShop.com, NHLShop.ca, Fanatics.com, Fanatics.ca, NHL team stores and NHL Shop NYC; availability and product listings can change.
For a resale or marketplace listing, look for the seller’s history, clear photos of the actual jersey and a return policy. Stock images alone do not show the condition or details of the item being sold.
Identify the exact jersey you are evaluating
Before comparing details, establish what the seller claims the jersey is: brand, season, team, player, retail tier and whether player or name personalization is original or was added later. The right reference is an official description or product photo for that same era, team and tier—not a generic checklist for all NHL jerseys.

Fanatics became the NHL’s on-ice uniform outfitter beginning with the 2024-25 season, under a 10-year agreement announced in 2023. Adidas had served as on-ice outfitter since 2017-18 and was to finish the following season. Consequently, an older authentic or replica jersey may legitimately carry adidas, Reebok, CCM or another period-appropriate label. Know the difference between current retail tiers
The NHL’s September 21, 2024 announcement described four Fanatics retail categories for the 2024-25 portfolio. These are tier distinctions, not a rule that only the most expensive version is genuine.

Prices are launch figures published by the NHL in 2024, not a verified current price list. Check current listings for the exact product. In particular, a heat-pressed crest is consistent with the announced Breakaway construction; the NHL described Premium and Authentic Pro as using sewn graphics. Inspect several details, not just one
NHL Shop’s buyer guide flags misspellings, a missing NHL logo, poor-quality stitching or materials, misaligned elements such as off-center numbers, and a price well below market value. A single cue does not establish that a jersey is fake; assess the garment as a whole and compare it with the exact claimed model.

- Text and logos: Check spelling, team marks and the NHL logo against official product references.
- Stitching and materials: Look for uneven or visibly poor workmanship, while accounting for the construction expected at the claimed tier.
- Placement: Compare number and graphic alignment, including whether elements appear centered as on reference photos.
- Tier-specific construction: Check whether graphics are sewn or heat-pressed in a way consistent with the jersey’s claimed tier and season.
- Labels and shield: Compare them with the exact model and era. A current Authentic Pro listing describes a holographic NHL Shield, but that detail alone does not authenticate every retail, resale or vintage jersey.
NHL Shop’s guide gives no numeric threshold for a suspicious price. Compare like with like—same tier, era, personalization and condition—and treat a price far below comparable items as a reason to scrutinize the seller and garment, not as conclusive proof.

Request close, well-lit photos of the labels, NHL Shield, crests, numbers and seams, plus any claimed certificate or proof of purchase. Compare those photos with official product information for the exact model. The available official guidance does not establish a universal public authentication service for standard retail jerseys, nor does it say that a hologram, tag, stitch or price by itself settles authenticity.

If the seller will not provide useful photos or documentation, or the details do not match the claimed season and tier, pause rather than relying on a confident listing title. NHL Shop’s jersey sizing and buying guide sets out general counterfeit warning signs; current example listings for Fanatics Authentic Pro and NHL Shop Authentic Pro can help illustrate a current product description, but they cannot verify a different individual jersey.
