First, check whether the affected player’s NFL game has actually started and what lineup-lock rule your league uses. If the player’s slot is still open, replace them with an eligible option whose game has not started. If it is locked, check whether your platform’s automatic-substitution feature applies; otherwise, ask your commissioner what the league’s existing rules allow. A post-lock change is not guaranteed.
Check what “lineup locked” means in your league
A lock may apply separately when each player’s game starts, or to the whole roster when the first game of the week or day begins. These rules produce different outcomes: a player can be locked while other slots remain editable, or the entire lineup can be frozen. ESPN documents both individual game-time locks and a League Manager setting that locks the roster at the first game of the week or day in its lineup and roster lock guidance.
- Open your team roster and check the affected player’s game status and scheduled start time. Use the actual game start, not just when you saw the news.
- Check your league’s lineup-lock setting and whether that player’s slot is still editable.
- If it is open, choose a position-eligible replacement whose game has not started, then confirm the change saved.
League rules and platform settings vary, so an individual player’s lock does not necessarily mean every roster slot is locked.
If the slot is still open, make the swap now
Choose a replacement who qualifies for that exact roster slot, such as a starting lineup position or a flex position, and whose game has not begun. Confirm the player appears in the active slot after you save. Do not assume a player can be moved after their own game starts just because another game in the period is still pending.

On Yahoo, leagues configured for daily lineup changes generally allow active/bench moves until each player’s scheduled game start. The applicable deadline depends on the league’s configuration; consult Yahoo’s roster and lineup management guidance and transaction and lineup deadlines rather than assuming one timing rule applies to every league.
If the slot is locked, check automatic substitutions
ESPN Lineup Protection
ESPN’s optional Lineup Protection is narrow. The starter must be marked “Out” or “IL,” and an available bench player must be eligible for that roster slot. ESPN says, “It is NOT a lineup optimizer!” A player who is merely questionable, unexpectedly inactive, or otherwise not covered by those conditions may not be replaced. NFL Fantasy Auto-Swap Inactives
NFL Fantasy’s Auto-Swap Inactives is limited to players projected to score zero points and starts the top-ranked eligible player in the Backups list. It is not a general-purpose replacement tool, so check that the feature is enabled and that your intended backup is ranked appropriately. NFL Fantasy Support says, “Players are designated ‘Inactive’ by their NFL teams about 90 minutes before the game is scheduled to start if they are unable to play.” That is approximate timing guidance, not a guarantee that every late status update will arrive at that point. Ask promptly whether the league’s existing rules permit an adjustment. Include the player, the lineup-lock time, when the news arrived, and the replacement you would have used. The commissioner’s authority and the league’s fairness procedure are league-specific; do not assume an exception will be granted.

On ESPN, only the League Manager can make roster changes on a manager’s behalf after a player’s slot locks. ESPN documents the post-lock process in its roster adjustment instructions. This describes what the League Manager can do on ESPN, not a promise that they should or will change a lineup.
